Well, why not check out some of our soil grow journals? I don't give my plant any nutrients until they shwo a need for it, such as their new growth yellowing. Use some excellent soil such as Fox Farms OCean forest with some added perlite. Don't water them until the pots are dry. Keept he temps within range 70-80. You should be fine.
what else are you doing to kill them?
edit: I just googled your Jiffy Mix potting soil and it doesn't look that great. Go get some good soil
