I think more perlite in the mix might help, though I'm not sure if that's your clone problem. That kitty litter (basically the same thing, I think, I looked at it in your link) looks awfully fine and dense, perlite lets oxygen to the roots. Just a thought.
PS I would never dream of cutting away the peat on something that small, those little root hairs are so tender at that age, I wouldn't even breathe on them
