bagabones73--Most people end up using HPS for flowering for convience to them, maybe got the light free or whatnot. What you'll find out when growing a mother plant, is that pretty much any light will grow mother plants, it comes to how many clones you'll need, and how often to have a HID light over it. I have one friend that take 8 clones off his mother plant every 2 months, and just uses one cfl bulb for the mother, super tight and almost not enough node spacing for cloning, but gets him by. I've sure people with HPS lights on their moms' don't have a problem with clone size or numbers, but the MH is better for mom plants. You want some spacing on clones, and really with any of the lights, MH, HPS, cfl, or T5's, it's not what light you use, but how you use that light. I've seen tight noding on all of them, and I've seen stretched plants under all those lights. Whatever you'd decide on, just make sure to use it to it's fullest potential. IMHO And for your question, length of cuttings, I have better luck with somewhat bigger ones, when they are too small, alot of times they just don't seem to take off for me. 3-4 inches is ideal, 2 inches don't work real well.
