I used to think otherwise, but I think topped or LSTed plants yield more. More % of the plant is in the optimal light zone. Outside maybe no difference, the sun penetration is the same top or bottom, but with HID lights, the zone between too close and too far isn't that deep. With topped plants, I think the oversized root system going into flower gives you an advantage, too.
