The plant will live if you can control the environment a little bit. When I set my plants out early I place a 1gal milk jug with the bottom cut out over them. It softens the sun and most of all protects them from the wind. It also raises the humidity, a real good thing. I keep them on until I get 4 or 5 true leaves, trying to do all I can to promote ladies.
