the sooner you start, the easier it is to form the plant and spread it out.
the later you start the less of a circle the plant is or takes longer to make it so, i find it too bothersome starting very early *fiddling with fine strings*
so my plants have a more rectangular shape.*which fits my space anyway*
but really, as long as you give it enough veg time and the stems bend enough, even 1 month into veg is not too late.
but the later you wait, the more potential budsites will be lost to shade and the bigger the top cola is compared to the others *potentially shading out others*
the top cola will always be a little bigger though, unless you top. but if you start soon enough the difference will be neglible.
the more budsites you have or want, the longer you will have to veg to get them up to size.
the thicker the stem, the bigger the bud.
usually about 3 buds for me are the biggest. first i bend the plant back and 2 budsites become equally big to the first, then i bend those back and depending on patience or other things, whether i wait for them to become almost as big or not.
i like having more tops, i thought 7 was good and anything over was too much and resulting in smaller buds, but then i realised it depended on veg time and how big each budsite got before flowering, so now i have 10-15 or so.
