I'm not sure what others think, but I use sulfuric acid to lower and sodium hydroxide to raise my pH.

Sulfuric Acid = Battery Acid, available at all auto parts stores
Sodium Hydroxide = Chemical Grade for Labs, available online

I make concentrated working solutions of both and then use these to adjust pH. A little goes a LONG way.

So far so good...
