I tend to buy on the cheap. I know, I know its a big box brand but I have nothing but good things (mostly) to say about Shultz Garden-Safe organic potting soil. Its nice and rich and has a good amount of peat and a small amount of perlite mixed in. It has nice rich humus, and holds moisture well. For this reason I find that its extremely beneficial to put together 3 parts soil to 1-2 parts perlite. depending on the container size, bigger gets more. Has a tendency to compact inside rootmass, another area where supplimental perlite is helpful as well. It is OMRI certified, and as best I can tell, pest free. I had a spider mite outbreak my first grow, also using this soil, but I traced back to a new houseplant I didn't spray down with neem before I brought it inside. It has a initial fert content of .09-.09-.09. I find germinating from seeds to be quite easy to accomplish. Small seedlings seem to enjoy the light nute content.
Constant ph is easy to maintain as well. Shoot, for 8 bucks a bag on sale, I'll take it
