I'm the new biggest advocate of the tie down. No reason to top any more. I got an untopped plant that is tied so its about 5.5 inches tall(should be almost a foot untied), and it has about nine points of growth now. It looks like a dang bonsai shrub or something. I placed the plant close to the rim of its pot, and tied the tip to the other side when it was ready. The tie caused the entire stem(not just a portion) to widen substantially as well. So much less stressful to tie down(more stress, more males!). BUT, this is just my opinion on the matter and I realize many people have great results from topping. Good growin buddy. BTW you can flower plants that haven't begun alternating, but I think yield is affected.
