I keep a couple of wet cotton buds in the lid of any pens I store, it stops the dryout and annoying rehydration process.
The pens usually contan sodium hydroxide reference solution also, its a clear gel like substance. Most meters have a stopper plug on the bottom that can be removed, then you get a syringe and fill the pen with new gel every 3 or 4 months as the solution leaks in there and contaminates the reference.
