Yes the ph up/down is necessary. It contains a buffer that makes it stable. If you use venegar, it will work at first but after a few hours your ph will go up again. After some time of this your nutrient solution will be all wacky and will need to be changed. This dosen't happen with hydro ph down because it is stable.
