Can anyone suggest anything for building my own aeroponics setup. I am a first timer and do not know where to begin. I also cannot afford a prebuilt kit as I am in South Africa and it is too expensive for us to import kits.

i suggest you cruise through some old threads in this forum for some ideas, the best idea that comes to mind is in the "My cannabis images" forum, under insaneK9's picture diary. he uses an aerospring, which ive also built from using his plans from his thread.. and it's taken me through a complete grow... pretty cheap to build too.. the idea's pretty universal as well.. check it out.
another cheaper method would be DWC, which is also shown in his thread.. he uses that system as well..
