Aeroponics Gallery

Aeroponics grow systems basically apply water and air to plant roots to nourish growth. There are, apparently, two basic types: Bubbler and Sprayer.

This thread provides a posting point for aeroponics system designs in use today. It is a gallery of Bubblers and Sprayers. I'll start it off with two simple constructs. These constructs are only examples. I hope others will add their working systems to the gallery.

Format Request I visualize a single post per system. This post would include system description; advantages; simple construction instructions; photos; and diagrams.

Novice Questions? Of course. If you see a system you want more information on, I'm sure the poster will answer any questions if they can.

Chat? If you must, but try to keep it brief. We are looking for concentrated information.

Growers, please contribute your hard earned system ideas.

That first picture that you have on there is not aeroponics, thats more of a deep water culture setup with a couple air stones sitting on the bottom. Aeroponics is the second picture.

Deep Water Culture (DWC)
permalink

Yes, I read that. Deep Water Culture was used as a name for the bubbler configuration. I read the link from here when I was deciding what system to build.

I thought DWC systems or Bubblers were a form of Aeroponics. Here was my reasoning . . . Most of the roots in both systems end up in bubbling water. That's it. I think there is a case for both systems being Bubblers. Neither meets strict criteria for aeroponics--I don't think--if you consider, say, droplet sizes.

I don't know. That's too much for me. I just want to see innovation. I'm hoping for more ideas.

Thanks Jimb02, I've learned something.

Scrub's Sprayer
permalink

System Description
-- 32 Gallon reservoir with a water line at 5 to 6 gallons
-- Two top configurations
------ 10-6-2 lid for seed growth. Start 10 seeds. Cull to 6 plants. Two maintenance holes.
------ 16X1 lid for clones or sea of green (SOG). Start 16 cuttings. Cull to an appropriate number. One maintenance hole
-- Two pin-head sprayers on top of the spray manifold to spray roots
-- Two micro-sprayers with dispersion cap removed at base of spray manifold spray into reservoir to agitate and aerate water
-- Adjustible spray manifold height (by replacing two verticle sections) allows raising water spray to hit base of cuttings then lowering to hit suspended roots
-- One hole in tote side (vice two in AeroSpring). The one hole is raised to reduce chance of leakage.
-- 2 x 1 1/2 inch PVC bushings to support plants eliminates netpots and grorocks but requires stabilization such as training.

Advantages
-- Adjustible plant configuration provides flexibility
-- Adjustible spray manifold height provides flexibility
-- Bushings allow easy clean-up and are cheaper than alternative
-- One hole raised vice two reduces potential for leakage and facilitates spray manifold height flexibility
-- Maintenance holes allow access to reservoir and initial additional grow hole

Simple Construction Instructions Please see photo.

Ok have been meaning to add something to this thread for a while, so here goes. My sprayer tub has been designed using Scrubs blue print with a few altertations. Have been using this tub for a couple of grows now and have had great results.

Description

- 102L storage contatiner with lid.
- 1000LPh pond pump.
- 12" air stone & air pump
- 6 x 3" net pots
- 1/2" poly pipe & elbow
- John Guest straight adapters x2 ( Push fit fittings)
- 18mm John guest pipe.
- 5x micro irrigation spray spinners
- 1/2" poly bulk head and ball valve
- 1/2" bulk head and garden fitting for filling the tub
- drain in bottom of tub using 1/2" elbow and garden hose
- 1/4" micro irrigation tube.
- 1/4 john guest push fit joiner
- 6 x adjustable micro irrigation drippers.
- water level site gauge.

Advatages

- Due to the irrigation drippers plants can be put straight into the system after sprouting, no nead to adjust spray manifold.
- John guest push fit fittings make for quick disasembaly and easy cleaning.
- Added air stone beacause you can never have to much O2.
- Drain in bottom of tub allows for complete drainage of system.
- individual drippers can be turned of when not in use.

Disadvantages.

- tub neads maintenace hole.
- drain in bottom can be hard to seal.

Aero Sprayer

Hopefully the simplest of sprayer systems. Take a five gallon bucket with lid. Cut holes for your net pots. Use expanded clay, and a single tiny rockwool cube/piece to keep the seed in place. Get a pump and fountain attachments. I started with MiracleGrow and it worked fine, but i have moved to VitaGrow. The only other things you need are a light and a timer. And you would benefit from a PH kit.

On the post above, I saw an add in a hydro magazine for a hydroponic/organic growing convention at Epcot Nov 10-13. Also there is an indoor gardening expo in Ft. Lauderdale the same weekend(12-13). Make a trip out of it!

At The Lands in Epcot, they have a ride all about food, farming, and resources. Well, part of the ride you go outside and they show you their hydroponic greenhouse.

The really cool set up was their Aeroponic/Sprayer system. They basically had all these plants on a conveyor chain (so they're hanging imagine) and the roots would pass through this chamber where ONE sprayer would soak the roots in nutrient solution. It was really efficient use of their supplies, not to mention sweet looking (=

I don't remember checking how they had the rest of the plant supported, although, I'm sure riding around that track would shake things up enough to strengthen the stem.
