We all know the qualities we like in our females, as we see them grown all the way out and smoke the results. My question is how do you go about choosing a male, given the space problems most of us have? Is it unrealistic to begin an admittedly long term project without the luxury of being able to grow out a large number of males to choose from? Beyond growth characteristics (short internodes, early flowering, etc.) are we looking at the amount of resin? Do we smoke to check potency? Are any of the qualities we are looking for sex linked? Also, given the space requirements for raising these males, keeping two (or more) populations going as per RRS is totally out of the question. Assuming we are speaking of actually improving or developing a strain as opposed to just making seeds, is there a minimum number of plants you need to keep going at any one time to be successful, or even somewhat so? Is it a pipe dream for most of us??

![]() | I know when I'm looking for a male, I go by certain things. 1: Is it healthy. 2: Look for resin. 3. Smoke the leaves. 4. Growth characteristics. 5. Hermaphrodite resistance. 6. Node spacing/branching. 7. How big the bracts are. And finally, the only way to really know, is to test out the offspring. (Remember, just because it flowers earlier than others, it doesn't necessarily mean it will have a shorter flowering time). >>The more #'s, the better. Sometimes you can get lucky and find one in a lot of 10 or 15, sometimes it takes thousands. But the more, the better your chances are to finding what you are looking for.

![]() ![]() ![]() | Alpha- the characteristics you are looking for in a male of course depend on the female you are planning on breeding to, and the results you are looking for. My question was more how to identify those chartacteristics on plants (male) we normally do not get to determine by smoking.
