Question Question bout Seeds??
permalink

Ok I have a bunch of plants out in the woods and they are starting to show sex and i want seeds because they are very hard to get a hold of here. Does getting seeds really affect the yeild and potency of your buds that much? How much percent less do you think i'd get if i bred my plants? any help would be appreciated

well if thats yer main concern is getting seeds then i guesll itll be worth it in the long run. but the buds that are gonna contain your seeds its not gonna be as potent. itll still be good, but if u never bred it or polluniated them, it will be full force. cuz when the plant produce seeds it uses more of the thc to produce the seeds.

Hi there.

You'll have to pollinate asap if you want nice, viable seeds without sacrificing yield. I usually pollinate females as soon as preflowering starts.

No scientific evidence backs up that "Sinse" is more potent than seeded buds. I have grown unpollinated plants and pollinated plants side by side (same strain, same age), and noted no difference as far as potency is concerned.

Seeds can be ready in less than three weeks, but usually you'll have to wait for at least 4-5 weeks. Starting 15 days after preflower pollination, watch the swollen calyxes. Some seeds will be dropped by plants very early, and they're hard to find on the ground outdoors, so you'll have to pick them just before they fall.

Also, if you pollinate different females of a same batch (again, same strain, same age), you may notice differences in seeds between the plants. This is normal. Some plants will produce bigger seeds than others, and the shape can also vary quite a bit. Colour, and pattern (stripes) are usually the same, though.

I'm attaching a few pics to show you what to expect...

Hope this helps.

Here are immature seeds (look at the sides...). Nearly ready, but not quite (here 18 days after pollination).

Now seeds have a more "finished" aspect, but still not quite ready (these ones could germinate, but you can still spot "unfinished regions" on the shell, looking like "veins").

And, at last, mature beans. Note that the plants (M1 and M2 come from two different mothers, same strain but different phenotype) have produced seeds that look different.

When to pollinate
permalink

Preflowering will start on plants aged two to three months, outdoors, under natural photoperiod. Some strains respond quite fast to decreasing daylength while others won't grow preflowers before they're at least 90 days old.

The trick here is to have males ready by the time the females can be pollinated. In order to achieve this, you might have to start a first batch 3 or 4 weeks before the other plants.

I'm attaching a pic of a preflowering female at the time I have pollinated this plant.

When done properly, preflower pollination ensures from 20 to 100 seeds without sacrificing yield. It's very important to harvest buds on a seed bearing mother in my opinion. Failing to do so (some growers pollinate like mad and get only seeds ; all they can smoke are empty calyxes) means you have no idea of the quality potential of the plant.

One last pic to show you that you can still harvest buds when pollinating females outdoors. Of course it's better to do so when there is no wind... And don't try to pollinate under the rain, pollen doesn't like high humidity levels.
