Pollen time?
permalink

Just checked a male and found pollen, yellow dust, over several leaves with several flowers open. First time ever seeing a male plant in action.

I want to pollenate just certain buds on my 2 females - one female has really great smoke and the male seems to be highly sativa -

As I understand, I can now just collect this pollen with a brush into an envelope and brush directly onto the buds I've selected right?

I plan on selecting the lower buds as they are smaller and less ripe than the rest of the plant - is this okay?

I'm going to do this in a separate area from my flower room.

How will I tell if I'm succesful?

Any input is helpful -have read much onthis site - looking for clarification before doing this.

Thanx

If you already done it, you should start seeing the little pods fill out on the females, and the hairs that got hit with pollen, will start to turn red or brown earlier than normal.
I always like to pollinate early, or just the lower branches, and definitely do not do this in your grow room as you already know and stated. And leave it in a different room for a day, and spray the entire plant with water, to kill the excess pollen.
If you wait later on in the flowering period, the plant might not have enough energy to make the seeds, especially if you pollinate the entire plant, this will lead to immature seeds, or pods filled with a white substance, where the plant never did have enough energy to even form the seeds.
If you pollinate early enough, you can do the entire plant, this will produce seeds only at the nodes, and will not effect yield greatly, and still give you around 50 to 100 seeds. And they will have enough time to ripen.

Thanks for your reply. The info is helpful in confirming what I was thinking. I took about 3-4 days to collect the pollen from only about 25% of the flowers that had opened. Really amazing as I have never seen this before even in other plants - never grew them either of course - yet this time I actually seen the flower explode and spit the pollen out - Real easy to see how 1 male could pollinate 100's of females - lucky guy - kept the flower sextions ona plain piece of paper for a few days and the flowers would still open - all in all - I have about 1 small teaspoon - more than enough.
On one female, I have harvested the 3 main grow tips all ready - the smaller buds look kinda new so I'm going to try just 2 buds and leave the plant alone to see what happens - the remaining buds are fairly small and seeing as how I have about 2-3 ozs just from 3 tips -11" colas - I can let the rest sit there for awhile.

The second lady is about 4-6 weeks into flowering. Again -I'm just going to take the 2 lowest branches and see what happens.

Going to save the rest of the pollen for another lady yet to be sprouted and pollenate earlier on that one. When I collected the pollen, you could see it all in the air. I have weed allergies and had the sniffles for a day. Would not go upstairs for 2-3 hours and then I took off my the clothes and showered upstiars before I even entered the grow room - couldn't believe the pollen in the air. Doing just one or 2 branches is going to be fun.

I was thinking about wrapping the branch in a paper bag, sealing it off - collecting some pollen in a straw - put a small hole in the bag - insert the straw and blow real hard - put tape over the hole and leave alone for 48 hours - the ladies have to go back into the grow area after pollinating - lights are not easily portable.

Once again, appreciate your input - means I'm on the right path.

BTW - this plant I have harvested is my first real attempt and the end result is far better than some of the 'good stuff' I'm use to. Tastes and smells cleaner and has a much stronger and longer lasting effect. Real glad I found this site.
