Cool Wanting to make male
permalink

It is my understanding that to make a male out of a long time clone, you can apply giberellic acid, (GA) for those of us who use it regularly. Which GA do you use, and at what concentration. How often is the GA applied to sustain the effect? As a plant tissue culture specialist, I have access to pretty much any hormone out there. Are there any ways to do it with compounds that are available over the counter? (so I don't have to steal from work) I read that silver nitrate in some floral preservatives can disrupt the hormone balance in the plant, producing the same effect as a GA treatment. By the way, I AM a master gardener with a couple college level degrees to grow with it. My subtitle as a junior gardener just because I'm new to this forum is kind of insulting. Technical responses will be most appreciated. A peer reviewed library reference would be great.

very good question

I did a quick search on google and there are several online growshops that carry it (giberellic acid). I dont know about getting it locally at the store and in what form it comes in. Personally, if I was breeding, I would want to find another seed from the same strain and find that male rather than trying to trick it chemically. Dont know anything about the silver nitrate, so I cant help you there. There is a discussion somewhere on subtitles in the forum, while technically you are correct, this is Rick's site , and he can rank anybody however he wants to. A peer review addition to library would be a good idea if it hasnt already been done.

By the way, welcome to HC.com

why

I am wanting to "trick" a clone because it will produce a seed crop that is not only genetically identical to the clones, but also have a very high ratio of genetically predetermined female seeds.

Thank you for the responses. I am hoping I can use them to make a recipe that works. By peer reviewed, I mean that in the technical sense. I mean a scientific journal, and probably not a manual for growing any specific crop. Although all helpfull suggestions will be most appreciated. There are probably some old hemp for rope research projects that covered the making of a male plant with GA treatments. The males make more rope faster.

I do not have access to seeds of this strain. It has been a clone for 15 years that I know of. I can't get it to hermaphrodite with stress either. I generally try to use PGR's as a last resort, but I can't think of anything else to try.

Well I found my scientific refrences. Here is one for starters, but I found at least 50. Found a bunch talking about using fertilizer to alter sex expression too, but they sound less reliable than a PGR.

Atal, C.K., Sex reversal in hemp by application of gibberellin, Curr. Sci.. 28, 408-409, 1959.

Most the refs I found were more current, but this one was first alphabetically. If you want a compiled list, I will make it available. I have not yet seen the articles themselves, just the refrences. So I can't guarantee their usefullness at this point.
