Question Selective Pollination Advanced Questions
permalink

Does anyone know if it's possible to harvest a male before it
releases any of it's pollen and then somehow extract the pollen?
If this is possible then what would be the most effective method
of pollinating part of a female so that some seeds would be produced; while the remainder of the lady would be left
unpollinated.

I have a friend who wants to know.

Thanks for posting that link Spunjah, but
if you read it it talks about letting the
male plant spew all it's pollen, which
is exactly what my friend does not want to do.

What he is looking to do is to extract
the pollen from an almost ready to
open male BEFORE it's flowers open and it completely impregnates all the ladys
in his garden.

Does anyone have any ideas that would
work? Any meaningful response would
be greatly appreciated.

ok now i see, first thing will be to move out the male ASAP now that you say it's almost ready, then take the male whatever you think there won't be an air corrent this could be a far end on your house, another room, etc. then very carefully start removing those male balls with small scisors... you need to try not to brake those sacs tho and that's kinda tricky if there's any sacs broken don't even try to wipe the pollen or it will blow all around and will stick to your clothes and if you don't know females can be pollinated with pollen that was carried from one room to the other... don't even try to do all the above on the same room of the ladies.. if not his sinsemilla crop will be screwed. Hope this helps.

more info would help us, indoor/ outdoor?

i assume the plants are next to each other or near each other outside and that you can't simply remove them from each other...

maybe try covering the male with a large clear plastic bag?

Bingo secret squirril! We are talking about outdoors...sorry,
I should have mentioned that upfront..but perhaps my friend could implement Spunjah's method of de-balling the males
where they stand. My only concern is, if you were real carful
how safe would you be with the girls in close proximity?

BTW Spunjah the bag sounds like a very clever idea, however
I'm not sure my friend will agree to it since he is really concerned
about not drawing any attention to the site. He seems to be
unwilling to take any chances when it comes to the securuty of his
site.

well sorry to say but it's very unsafe to have the girls close when picking the pollen, and that's because i'm pretty sure that if the balls are quite ready will brake very very easy.... you don't need lot's of pollen to pollinate so if just one little ball brakes and let his pollen out that's enought to get hundreds and hundreds of seeds and you don't want that.

Yank the males a week or so before they are ready to spill pollen, take them inside a garage/shed/house and put the balls in wax paper. Shake them up to release the pollen, and store in the refridge untill needed. Do not attempt this within 100 yards outside of your girls.

Thanks Rockclimber, that sounds like good advice,

The question is, how will my friend know when to
pull the male? He said it showed sex about 7-10
days ago. Is there a set period of time that would be
safe to wait, or can the correct time be deduced by looking
at the size of the pollen sacs?

If my friend waits too long I'm afraid their will be many seeds.

A male will drop pollen for months to ensure reproduction, so the secret is to wait for the earliest balls to form and enlarge. You will be able to tell when they are ready. Pull about a week before they look like they will explode. When you pull the plant, it will continue to produce pollen with the nutrients from the plant's leaves and stems. The balls will explode in the garage or shed, leaving you with pollen on the floor, or wax paper as you will. You can then shake the rest of the unopened sacks to help them release their pollen. Hope this helps
