Question Lighting on fresh clones???
permalink

Before I start, I know this has been touched on in the past on previous posts, but I can't exactly find the answer I'm looking for. I just took 10 clones last night, using the water cloning guide. I know that plants cannot utilize light correctly when they have no roots, so what is the best way to go about getting them on schedule? I left them in the dark last night and then hund a 60W light bulb above my clone box. Is this enough light, not enough light, or what. And there are small buds on top, so I am assuming that they need to be put under 24 hours of light. I just need to know how to light these guys up. Please help...

They'll root if you leave them on a sunny windowsill, but a flouro on 24/7 would make sure

EDIT to add that if they were taken from a flowering plant you can wait 5 weeks for new growth, it's easier to keep a mum on hand for clones, but it's useful to know you can still save your genetics right to the end of flowering

The clones need to be put under a 24hr ON period under some fluroescent lights, firstly to strike roots and secondly to eventually reverse the flowering period. If you have taken clones from a flowering plant it will take some weeks for them to revert to the veg stage.

Cool beans....I'll put them in the clone box and hope for the best. I only plan on finishing 5 of these plants, so hopefully I'll have better than a 50% survival rate. These are from my first grow, so I don't have a mum yet, and I wanted to make sure that I continued the genetics of the best plants. Now that I can see the difference in size, color, and of course buds I made my decision. Is it bad for clones that have little budlets on top to be put back into veg??? I'm hoping to get a bigger space to grow, so I will have room for a veg and flowering room. Anyways thanks guys...

Here is a picture of my clone box.

The box is made out of left over foam plyboard that I used to make a divider in my closet. It comes in 4' X 8' sheets (same as plywood). The box is about 3 feet long and 10" wide and 15" tall. I cut a hole in the lid of the box the exact size of the floro light housing and then taped it with aluminum foil tape. The ballast of the floro is what puts off the most heat, and this way the ballast isn't inside the box, just the bulbs. The lid slides into the box so you can move the bulbs closer and farther from the plants. I took this picture before I put an exhuast fan in the side (4" square computer fan 120v). All you need is a floro fixture, some foam board, a knife or razor, aluminum foil tape, and a measuring tape. I asume this could easily be done with a 4' floro also.

PS. If you haven't ever used aluminum foil tape before, it is the SH!T. (way better than duct tape). It sticks to everything, and has wax paper backing on it so you can rip off the length of tape you need, than pull off the backing to expose the sticky side. No more tape sticking to itself and pissing you off when you are trying to rip off a piece. Also light doesn't go through it so you can use it as a sealer and make something completely light proof.

oh yea... the foam plyboard has a silver shiny side, and a plain white side with writing on it. I think this stuff was designed to be used for growroom dividers.

It is a neat unit, you will get convection in thee also with the light keeping the clones at a good temperature for promoting adventageous roots, looks cool also
