well I'm about to clone the hell outta my plants for a sog. and I screw up alot at my first time doing stuff like flowering, transplanting, ect. So I was thinking of an easier way to clone not that cloning techniques are difficult but well I'm somewhere between idiot and clutz. anyway I thought if I raise the dirt level in a potted plant to the height of a branch off the main stock it will grow roots on any part underthe soil level and if I get a branch to grow roots I can cut it right there. please tell me if this is a stupid idea if it is.

What I Socal is onto is better known as soil layering

Take a branch, splice it and bury it and it will root while still attached to the stem. Like air layering but you bury it instead if attaching the dirt to the stem

but yeah, what he is suggesting is not agood idea

Bad idea as in your talking about rooting the much more woody base of a branch which is not going to make for a vigorous clone later (you want to root closer towards the growing tip) and bad idea as in you raise the soil to the bottom set of branches and after quite a bit of time you can cut off two clones with roots compared to just taking clones from all over the plant and rooting them in a shorter time period. Your method probably won't help you much if you want enough clones for a SOG.

I'm not looking for a sea of green more like a tide pool of green maybe, I've got one small female about 6" inches, and three undefined plants one 8" inches, one 1' 2" and the biggest 1'8" outside in a possible 4 foot by 10 foot area about 4 feet tall under the sun. I was thinking 20 plants MAX in a long term goal.
So heres the plan-2 females (today) 2 clones each =6 plants eventually 2 clones per plant = 12+6=18 plants after two cloning sessions. I seriously doubt I'm capable of cloning the branch cutting way.

I'd estimate about 8 weeks your way (taking into account growing time between clones and the extra long rooting time, maybe longer because 3/4 you don't evan know are definately female) or 9 days max the normal way to achieve the same result but with healthier more vigorous clones.

I did a search on google for "soil layering" and came up with a bunch of crap ... but there were a couple of articles there .....

here's a good one: http://rps.uvi.edu/CES/gf13.PDF

http://www.beechgrove.co.uk/fact_she...actsheet21.htm

http://www.greendealer-exotic-seeds....owtoLayer.html

http://www.slider.com/enc/30000/layering.htm

http://www.icraf.cgiar.org/res_dev/p...i/t5_la_ln.htm

I have this method in several of my "regular" gardening books as well .... Really any comprehensive home gardeners book may have this in there
