Two questions on odor...
permalink

  1. Would you rather have, if you could only have one, a carbon scrubber/filter or an ionizer?
  2. Could these air gaps (pictures) be the cause of my odor problems?
I am using a scrubber, DIY, and an ionizer (an ionizer/fan in one so I'm sure the ionizer part isn't worth a dime). I am assuming that the gaps are the source of my problems but the entire house is filled with odor, which seems to me like a lot of odor for those small gaps. I am off to HD to find a way to solve the air leaking problem.

Weather stripping works great for fixing light leaks.

Personally, I've never used an ionizer but I'd say go with the carbon scrubber anyway. Just be sure it is larger enough to accomodate the size of your grow space and your exhaust fan.

you didnt say if you were pulling or pushing the air through the scrubber. You should be pulling it out sintead of pushing it out. The latter will cause backpressure and push smell out of cracks. Passive intake with air being pulled out will have negative pressure and the air will be sucked in from those cracks.

I am pulling the air through and have active intakes (two). Would it be better to change the active to passive?

I just got back from HD with some door sweeps and weather stripping.

I would try it with just the fun pulling air out of the room and thats it. Take a lighter and put it in front of the cracks and the flame should be getting sucked in. If your air filter is good enough then that should take care of it

I did your lighter test (I don't know why I didn't do it earlier) and there is air coming out. I guess it is the active intakes that is causing it. I will change them over to passive and see if that solves the odor issue. Thanks for the test tip!

I put weatherstripping on the left hand side (the latch side) and, while it did help, I still have light leaks. I even have so much on there that it is almost impossible to latch the door. I am stumped as how I will fix this. The light isn't a problem (I can hang rubber on the inside to stop the light) I am just worried about the air leak.

There are advantages to a positive pressure room...temp control, air direction control....but the biggest disadvantage is smell and as you are finding out positive pressure will push the smell out and it will mix through the house air quickly and smell.

I have positive a pressure room (literally have to push on the door to close it when all is running. but I use 3 carbon scrubbers only 1 exhausts to the attic the other 2 exhaust back into the room itself.

Sometime I can't smell a thing and then my son's will stop by and tell me they can smell it...and I don't...so I realized how dangerous that can be if I get used to it. That's when I added the other scrubbers and now it's OK.

Any positive pressure room has to be sealed so tight...I used every technique to seal this room...it's pretty tight now.

And as you know strain can also make a difference in how it smells too.

DLA, I have been meaning to report my results. I put a sweep on the door and also changed the active intakes to passive. To my surprise, my house stopped smelling like green MJ in an hour!

i figured that was it, the passive intake is a hard one to master. its easier to do a passive intake. Im glad the lighter trick worked for u. Thats a true way to see which way air is moving

It worked but it also caused me to burn holes in my intake filters . No big deal but I'm glad that I saw it or I could have had bugs the size of a hotdog crawling in my room!
