Question Light leak help
permalink

Hello everyone. I just built my grow room & need advice on my light leaks. I'd like to say i'm not a carpenter & i have light leak issues.
My room is 3'x4'x8' if that matter's. My leaks are all around.
Im using an exsisting wall..the left & back walls are cement...the front & right side are plywood..the front is where the door is.
My leaks are all around the door...ceiling & right side wall.
I have purchased weather stripping foam 1/4" ..was thinking of going 1/2 " to be safe..i even bought some insulating foam sealant for gaps & cracks.
The room is not insulated { that might be a bigger problem than building the room }.
Actually the room is not as bad as i make it , once the light leaks are taken care of.. i'm ready.
Oh...one more thing ..by it being in the corner , i have nothing secure to hang the lights from.. thats where i messed up at...by me not knowing what i was doing...i framed in the bottom... but not the top......the top is kinda weak.. any help is appreciated.
Just so you'll know... 5 of mod's menage a' trois...2 mod godberry...& 2 of heads g-13-diesels just popped & are under floros.

Light leaks, ugh
I use silicone caulk, then 2x duct tape over that(after caulk is dry). Silicone fumes might not be good if it's not very well ventilated.
Drywall mud can be sanded, also.
cut black trashbags into strips and duct tape them, with caluk,
You get the ideas I'm sure.
and as for hanging your light,
dunno, might want to run a header no matter what.
drywall anchors and heavy reflectors might not be a good idea

Greetings dreaded,

It sounds as if you have quite a number of issues going on at the same time. I would suggest that the light leak issue is the least concern for the beginning of your grow, since you will be leaving the lights on at least 18 hours a day (if not 24) and besides, in veg, a little light shouldn't be a problem. If course, if it is stealth that you are looking for, then you have to solve the light leak.

I would suggest a trip to your local Home Depot (or whatever) and tell them you are looking to seal a room, and desribe the different sort of places where you are getting AIR leaks. They will be able to tell you what products to use. I would avoid using large amounts of silicone-based caulking since it really does stink, and unless you have great ventilation, will take quite some time to clear up.

IMO, you are right to be more concerned about the unsealed ceiling. Once your plants start going skunky on you (and they will) that smell will drift right up through the floor unless you have a good ventilation scheme going on. What are you thinking of using right now?

As far as hanging the lights, it was a little hard for me to understand why the top of your framing is weak. Any chance of getting a photo? What I would normally suggest is a couple of studs as cross braces, with a couple of more across the top to act as a support for the lights, but without a photo it is hard to tell.

If you need another way to frame the top simple nail (or screw) a couple of studs into the bottom of the floor joists, and then anchor them to your vertical studs with deck anchors, which you can get at HD. If you are not sure what deck anchors are let me know and I will send you some photos.

Hope this helps.

Peace.

I just run a thick line of silicon around all corners then smooth it into the cracks with my finger - works a charm!

An easy way to hang your lights goes a little some thing like this: cut a 2x4 every 6" untill you have 4 pieces that are 2x4x6...screw one piece to the wall near the cieling about 4 inches down. Make sure the 6 inches goes sideways. do the same thing directly across from it. Then take another piece and screw it to each of the first pieces. Now on each side of the width of the room you have a piece of 4x4x6. Use the rest of the 2x4 you cut from to set on top of the pieces you screwed to the wall. Now you have a beam going across the middle of your room that you can hang your light on...or even a light mover on down the road if you wish....hope that wasn't too confusing.
