Constructing a sealed grow room.
permalink

I will one day be constructing a sealed, airtight grow room.

The idea of a sealed grow room appeals to me on many levels. These being...

General Security.
  • No light leaks
  • No odour leaks
  • No or low levels of external noise

Environmental control.
  • Less organic matter traffic - dust, hair, fluff
  • No or low risk from pests such as whitefly, fungus gnats etc
  • Low risk from viruses and mould spores
  • More controllable temperatures
  • More controllable relative humidity
  • More effective co2 usage

I am now looking for any advice on CO2 saturation, has anyone here used propane burners or bottled CO2 before and if so what were the pros and cons of your particular system.

What I have pencilled out is that bottled CO2 is expensive, and you run out of it quickly. But has advantages in that it provides no extra heat which is a variable factor one might not want to fuck about with, you can use it to kill all pests in the room whenever you like by taking co2 levels to >10,000 ppm for an hour.

Advantages of propane burning is that it is efficient. C3H8 + 5O2 = 3CO2 + 4H2O and therefore cheaper. A mild security issue may also be an advantage in that no one would question why you're buying LPG bottles but repeatedly filling a pure CO2 bottle could arouse some curiosity. Bad side to LPG driven burners is it is flame and heat inside the grow room, neither of which anyone ideally wants, also I have been [perhaps incorrectly] informed that you cannot burn propane to reach a pesticidal level [>10,000 ppm] due to the flame burning dirty and releasing CO which is very bad for health. Also due to the large amount of water being given off in this method it might throw out an otherwise fine environment you had just balanced.

Personally I think I would swallow the costs of bottled CO2 for the advantages of immediate pesticide and the fact it doesn't throw off heat or water into the air. But I am certainly open for discussion so please anyone go ahead.

Runaway.

I use bottled
permalink

I have 4 welding supply companies withing 2 miles.
I tell them it's for a beer cooler.
They don't seem to care.
I go 4-5 weeks on a 20 lb bottle....that runs me $15 - $18

I have a 100 sq ft room that is airtight (w 8 ft ceilings)
when I'm in the room (like now)(computer's in here)
the gas shuts it's self off
I'm a big guy, and I exhale plenty of co2

bottled is the way to go...IMHO

no fuss...no muss...no fire

I use bottled and I like it, last thing i need in a indoor grow is more heat.....however my cab is tiny only 78 cubic feet so c02 will last me a while. if my room were really big I would lean towards a burner, but that would depend on many factors IE ventilation and my AC.

Yeah... The problem is that you can't really test the effects of the heat and water on the environment until your all dialled in. I think the pesticidal use of bottled co2 might be a clincher for me.

No, but it is an insurance piece and increases growth rate.

Have you ever seen an otherwise nice bud coated in dead spidermites? It's peace of mind amigo.

If you have a natural gas furnace, you may consider running a small copper gas line from the main fir a Co2 burner.
