How To: DIY 150w HPS Cool Tube
permalink

hello all GC.com users
i'd like to take you through a DIY thread about a cool tube i made for a 150w HPS.

well first off i have to say props to Buzzzd as the idea came from his thread about his MINI

a few things about me before we start

i am not very colloquial of a man in my typing, i learn by example and therefor kind of teach by example too

i over engineer the hell out of EVERYTHING (so you can probably omit a lot out of this thread)
the break down for me is:
33% building
33% taking care of them and watching them grow
33% the smoke (sometimes 100% on that one)
isn't it ironic how we care for them, nurture them, watch them grow like our own children. then kill them and burn them

the tube is 99% done on my end but i'm gonna post every other day or so; so that you can keep up with my ramblings and ask any questions that arise

the first step in this is to acquire all the parts and tools you can.
here is a bit of the stuff i came up with to start:

bunches of nuts and bolts, duct pieces, flanges, alum spacers (that wern't used). The two small Irwin packs are a 6-32 machine screw tap and the drill for it, i chose that size because it's the same as HDD screws in a 'puter and the all important Colman replacement globe. Most of the heavy tools are in the dungeon.

did want to get the same globe as Buzzzd tho, with that bulge along it's length, would have made for a little more air flow around the bulb but the one i made still has plenty of air flow, even with the 120mm 'puter fan i'll be using.

all for now

Grower4Life i hope i can be of some help to you. dont underestimate CFLs tho, my IT in flower now is getting mighty good, but i myself will be going to hopefully a 600w HPS for my 9sf cab. later on this 150w i will be adding 4 25w CFLs and put IT under that in 4sf so i can have the 9sf back to veg an AK clone

Buzzzd thanks for stopping by. well umm yeah, 2 90's dont end up being used unless you have a full height closet. but that is letting the cat outta the bag a bit early.

follow along and we'll all see what happens

sweet, ive been planning on making a thread on how to take apart a 150w hps security light. But ive managed to miss place my wire strippers in the mess that i call my room. Can't wait to see the cool tube, i may need to do this in the summer, but my stanely blower and 2 150w hps are pretty cool though it is fall.

hotpantsdan thanks for commin by. i did a test when i got it basically all done. i just used a 50-60 or so CFM 120mm PC fan and i could keep my hand about 1" under the globe for ever if i wanted, no hotter than out on a nice summer day

toshiba hey hows it going? i will be upping the cfls in my 9sf , but to what i'm guessing will be a 600w hps, not 150 ... may remove the center light in my 'retro' light setup. believe me tho, it's not as ghetto as it looks, check out the pic i put in the POTW submissions thread, it works ok for now. this 150w will be going into a 4sf cab in addition to 4 25w cfls for experiments (later it will be a mother cab). oh and there is a reflector for the 150w, you just have to wait
