Ducting Questions?
permalink

Ok, I've been looking at a few of the flexible ducting models on the market, some are insulated , some are not. I've heard that the insulated stuff helps keep things quiet. How much quieter will things be compared to regular ducting?

Also, my Veg cab calls for a 6" CanFan, but my Flower cab needs an 8" CanFan. I was wondering if it would be possible to purchase a single 25ft roll of the 8" insulated ducting, and use it for both the Veg and Flower cab. I don't need much ducting for my Veg cab, so I don't want to spend the money on stuff that will go to waste, but I want it to be silent.

What do you guys think? Could I get away with using just 8" insulated ducting, without using duct reducers? Would this cause any problems, or should I stick with the reducers?

Thanks in advance.

You can get a reducer in the heating and air conditioning section of any big hardware stores. The insulated ducting will definitely be much quieter than non insulated. If you are thinking of not using reducers, you can add extra insulation and use a lot of duct tape I suppose, but it would be better to use the right sizes of everything. Rigging it will generally be making it louder.

"Rigging it will generally be making it louder."

Even when useing the reducers? I don't need 25ft of 6" insulated ducting. It would seem like a waste, plus I would have to find a place to store the rest.

They sell these industrial ring clamps for linking ductwork. That might be durable enough to secure things without the reducers. But then again, I don't want to complicate anything. I guess I'm going to be stuck with spare ductwork.

Thanks for your input.

so you are planning on using some ring clamps to clamp 8" ducting onto a 6" flange? I am a little confused because I thought you said you didn't want reducers, then you said you did? maybe it's just too late for me, i'm sorry.

Well I would like to do whats best, without wasting any money on unnecessary materials. But I don't think that's going to cut it. Like you said "Rigging will generally make it louder."

the bigger the duct the quieter it will be.

i would use the large duct and use reducers where i had to, or just tape it down. having 6 inches of 6" duct would be better than having several feet. if you blow that big fan through 6" duct, it will only flow as much as the duct can handle..so you might as well have bought a smaller fan.

if you want to reduce 8" just clip the wire in two spots, tape half the duct down pull up the other half and tape that. also cut a few inches of insulation out at the end then pull the end of the wrapper down and tape that as well. looks much better than having insulation hanging all over the place.

I'm not sure what you mean by " If you blow that big fan through 6" duct, it will only flow as much as the duct can handle.. so you might as well have bought a smaller fan."

I will be needing a 6" inline fan for my Veg cab, and an 8" for my Flowering cab. I was under the impression that 6" ducting went with 6" fans, and 8" ducting went with 8" fans, no trouble. The reasons for the duct reducers would be to eliminate the need to spend money on 6" ducting, since I won't be needing much for the Veg cab.

So I'm guessing if I use 8" ducting for a 6" fan, the airflow should be pretty much unrestricted?

yup basically.

i dont understand your need of 2 fans. you could use one big fan for everything. esp if the cabs are close.

DO NOT put a smaller fan and larger fan inline with each other. regardless of duct size.

a smaller fan can only flow x amount of air. thats it. if there is a larger fan down the line, it will be handicapped to the flow rating of the smaller fan.

also duct of a certain size can only flow but so much air, this is why basically all 6" fans cap out at around 300cfm. a higher cfm fan wouldnt do you any justice, as the duct just cant move that much air.

also a 8" fan turned down {speed controller} to the smaller cabs needs will be quieter than a 6" fan turning faster to do the same work.

im not really sure what your specific situation is, aside from not wanting to buy 2 rolls of duct.

so on that note, use the larger duct and reduce it down if you need to for the smaller cab.

keep in mind 8" insulated duct is about a foot across.
