On a daily basis I see residential wiring that not only fails building code, but defies the realm of common sense. Some of it is just extremely old and out-dated knob-and-tube, ungrounded, the original wires falling apart with newer additions spliced in. Some of it is just plain stupid, done by people thinking they know what they are doing when really, they are creating an extremely hazardous environment for their family and their insurance policy, like seeing a guy with his young daughter in the electrical isle of the hardware store asking the (not so) knowledgeable employee range of stupid questions. Why is this guy trying to do this himself? This got me thinking: if regular joes think they can mess around with the electrical in their homes, what kind of practices go on while a stoner tries to wire up his grow room? I can only imagine how unsafe some grow rooms might be judging from the modifications I have fixed and eliminated in former grow houses. Unsafe that is, from a personal and family health stand point, and unsafe from a security stand point. No one wants to come home to a fire truck extinguishing their house and a police cruiser waiting for you with its rear door open. So on that note, I offer up my knowledge on the matter. New at growing I may be, but experienced in electrical I am. I will answer any questions anyone has and possibly one day make up some photo guides to wiring. I know most people don't want to be hiring an electrician to wire their grow room and thus do the job themselves. I would rather get the work myself and sign a non-disclosure form, but perhaps this way a few less growers will wind up dead or in jail.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Hello Indiegurl, welcome to GardensCure.com ![]() We need more qualified electricians here. We had a couple a while back, that never really devoted much time to the boards, so their expertise wasn't available as often as maybe it should have been. I was in the process of getting my electrical up to par, I did some reading, it all seemed fairly simple to accomplish, but I opted to hire an electrician. Which definitely was not cheap! Haha. But I suppose I can rest assured that everything that was done is professional grade and up to code. Safety first.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Welcome to the garden Glad to have a knowlegable electrician on board. I'm one of those DIY guys and admittedly have done some slightly haphazard electrical work in the past, and was lucky enough to get away with it. :knocks on wood: I've since studied a lot of books and feel confident that my wiring is solid now, although not up to code I'm sure. The sad part about this hobby being illegal is it makes it much more difficult to get an electrician out there to do work. I know who to ask when I have any electrical questions ![]() Hope to see you around ![]()

![]() ![]() | Welcome to the boards Indiegurl, I look forward to reading your inputs! This just made me think though, if you look at Norml, it's a bunch of lawyers that are dedicated to working on law reform of MJ, and there is a whole collection of lawyers who advertise their service in High Times specifically for the purpose of helping out potheads... So where is the directory for 420 friendly electricians? post some NDAs that people can download and have the electrician sign before hand and away we go!

Oh yes it did, my compliments to the 7 Pointed Leaf.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | An update of the electrical panel (fuses?) to a modern one with breakers? First of all, a panel change means hydro needs to disconnected your incoming service wires from the main supply. This means an inspector. You can do it illegally but it is not the kind of risk im willing to take in regards to my personal well being and career. You'll have to find a good electrician around your area and get some quotes. I'll ask my boss what he charges (as i just do the work and dont handle the customers). It's usually a 4 or 6 hour job and electricians usually charge about $45 (can - where is this site based out of anyway ) plus materials. Another thing you will want to make sure of is that the wiring to your lighting outlets (and any other large drawing device) is modern wire that is grounded and of the proper gauge for the amps you're running and on its own breaker or another circuit with not many things on it. No fridges or a/cs. Knob-and-tube doesn't cut it ![]() Quote:
