What do people use to do this? I've been using this crappy plastic round stuff under my five gallon buckets and I've found that somewhere underneath where I can't see one or both have some split or crack. When I return hours after watering, even if it doesn't overflow the water trickles out and ends up all over the floor! I'm going to replace them both with something or another and it's going to be tricky because my plants are grown through a screen and I hardly move them.

I gave up on those lame little saucer trays - every one leaks. I put the whole garden in a kiddie pool ($9 - might be hard to find this time of year) and don't worry about it. I also don't water so much that very much comes out, but when it does, its usually dried up very soon.

That's a damn fine idea! I hadn't thought of that but I'll keep it in mind. I think most of them would be too big to be practical in my situation. I need to be able to kneel in my space and I don't want to be in the pool. I've also found I'm not great at approximating how much water I need to add before it starts running off, so I'd really like something that I can drain. I may just get a "super tub" like healer talks about from home depot and stick a grommet / spicket in it.

DIY 2x3 flood table

I'm just tryin for simpler...

Maybe pipeline it over to something bigger, im new to this hempy thing and have a really small one going, but its worked for me. My size constraints dont allow for me to just let it leak out the side into a tray, I have a short pipe leading to a small basin to collect runoff. Pics in my current journal.

Just make sure the joint between the bucket and the pipe doesnt leak.

Even if you overwater too much, and it fills up your basin, just quick replace it with another one, and youre good to go.

my pool is 48" diameter and there was a smaller 36" one too. I am not in a cab though, I have an "open" space with dangling panda film around the edge of the garden. I never get "into" it, but the plants take up almost all of the footprint inside the pool. I haven't tried a scrog yet (that is next!) so I am not sure how inconvient it will be to get into the middle of it, but so far I can easily reach everything in it.

That tub looks like a great solution. Another one, though possibly pricy, is bus tubs from a restaurant supply shop. We have "Cash and Carry", a regional or national chain that sells this stuff, I think they are about $6 each. Nice and deep, rigid enough to carry full of liquid, and come in a couple sizes. I use em for all kinds of thing but haven't thought about plants in them until now.

seedling flats work, i have the 1 X 2 feet ones and since I don't move em around they never crack. I mean i don't slide the trays on the floor. For runoff, I just suck it out of the tray with a wet-dry vac.

The 1 X 2 flats hold 2 of my buckets perfectly, not sure if yours will fit 2 in a flat.

Online they're 1.50 - $2.00 each.

Mine is probably the most expensive set up - the hempy buckets sit in my e&f tables and drain to my reservoirs.

I like the kiddie pool idea!

Here's a visual (though none is needed) just to spruce up the thread. These are soil, obviously, but same idea as for the hempies. I actually get more runoff in soil since its harder for me to judge how much water to use and the drainage holes are huge (instead of the tiny holes on hempies)

I also figure the 48" diameter pool is a good rule of thumb for my 600w lamp's coverage although the lamp is rectangular. At any rate, plants creeping out over the edge of the pool grow pretty well too.

Whoa, thank you for that chappie, and BC and futuregrower too! Just seeing that kinda makes me want to use a kiddie pool, though I still don't think it would be quite practical in my set up. Does anyone know if a standard five gallon bucket would fit in a seedling flat without putting pressure or breaking the sides of it? They are one foot in diameter....bleh..it would probably just crush the sides. They are probably twice the size of your buckets future.

Just a thought...

Get some tubeing. Like air pump tubeing or hydro line tubes. Get them in the hempy holes wtaer tight. Shouldnt be hard if you drill/match size up good. Then have them coming out of the room into a dish? lol This is why I dont like using nets. I enjy taking the plants out to water.
