Question What kind of material to set smart pots on?
permalink

Ok so I'm in the process of designing my room, which I have a full 10' x 12' room with a closet to take advantage of. I was thinking of having 5 rows with 5 plants in each row. Also I was going to construct each row of plants ona sligt slant so that when I am watering all the excess water will drain into a bucket at the front of each row. I am not sure what kind of material I should set my smart pots on though. Should I just construct each row out of wood and staple heavy duty black plastic garbage liner type material like black poly to the top? Or maybe use a heavy duty plastic to construct the rows so that they less susceptible to leakage? Or any ideas of what to make my rows out of that I havent even mentioned? I hope I'm explaining this correctly, I know what I'm envisioning here but I don't always word these things out right. Any ideas of advice is much appreciated. Thank you.

Ok. What kind of grow? I'm not sure what you mean by smart pot. is it IRB/Hempy/ dutch pot, or recirculating ebb/flow or something or what?

Are the smart pots already made/purchased, or can you drill holes in them?

n/m, they are burlap type pots. gotcha.

Linoleum trays. Water-proof enough to handle light drainage, make 'em yourself out of linoleum and flex the sides up a little to handle drips........

BUT.......are you sure you want Smart pots indoors?

Thumbs up Linoleum - Good Idea
permalink

I like the idea of using linoleum. I can construct the rows out of wood which would be the most sturdy and use linoleum on top no matter how cheap it is. Thank you. As for the smart pots, I guess I was planning on using them because a friend of mine has been using them for indoor soil (I am doing indoor soil, I need the forgiveness of soil). I probably should maybe check into that, what wpuld you recommend using? I know the smart pots worked fine but if theres something that would give me a better advantage I'm all ears, thats what I'm here for =)

Indoors, hell you could do anything. If you like soil, I say just regular old pots, OR if you like the super pots, you could also just put each one on a tray, and don't water so much. You don't need to water til it runs off with soil, ya know. Or just do it til you get a trickle of drainage.

Other than soil, IRB ( or hempy, or Dutch Pot) is pretty easy, if you want passive hydro. Search "Hempy" on here and you'll get a lot of threads.

Or you could do DWC.

But if you go for soil, don't plan on a runway to drain everything, IMO. you don't get that much runoff that you need a spillway. Just some pot saucers will do, or trays, or whatever.

I've never seen those smart pots in a room, you gotta let us know how they work.
I was thinking of the drainage coming from the sides, but I remember now, burlap bags don't really drip out the sides unless it's a round root-ball shape.
Smart pots and linoleum should be fine, plus later if you want to do a different style, the pots fold for storage!

Welcome to the Garden, but beware........I am now a strain whore, I wanna grow all of them! It sneaks up on you.

Thumbs up drain & flush
permalink

I should of been more specific about the need for draining. I know that when I water them there wont be much excess water where I would need any sort of drain system. I need the drain system for when I flush the plants. Its just kind of an added bonus when I water them that they are able to drain any excess. The smart pots only drain out the bottom by the way, I know if you think about it it would seem like the water might just seep out anywhere of the burlap. It is also nice to be able to store them, transport them empty and wash them out easier than regular pots. They also wont crack.

They'll never make it in my neighborhood. No Crack? not happening.

Then my is just use something like linoleum, maybe put some sides on it by torching the lin. where you want the bend and tieing it off, or glue sides on it or whatever. You gotta do a journal for those pots. I love the biodegradable idea of them.

Hello,

I have messed around with "smart pots" before, but out doors only. It seems a waste to me. I would go with a regular plastic container. The smart pots that I have used drain water quickly and the growth compared to regular containers was noticeable. Could be a total different story indoors though.

When roots reach air they die. Air pruning I believe.

Either way good luck and may the force be with you,

bert
