| i am curently growing 2 maryjane plants, and the grow area i have them in is only 2 and half feet tall, people keep telling me this is not tall enough even if i try ScrOG, anyway, im wondering if it is possible to just build a box outa wood to grow the plants in? or do you have to make it outa certain material? maybe this would be better for me to make a small 4 feet tall box to grow these plants in and just hide it in a corner. would it be cheap to make becuase im kinda taxed after all the soil/pots/ferts/and the HPS light, any advice is welcome, thanks Vee p.s. would it be best to just build a fram with 2x4 or somthing like that, then make the walls and stuff outa particle board. | ||

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Hello, You could also make an aluminium frame and drape black and white plastic over it, Im sure you can buy square lengths of alum where you live, that way the box could be expanded or collapsed as needed. I would use laminated wood over unlaminated if you do use wood as you dont want any problems with the wood roting due to high humidity and moisture. A 2 foothigh box is way to small IMHO unless you are planning to clone the plants on 12hrs and begin flowering immediatley, it will work but you are in for an uphill battle when they stretch, you would also want to have a nice air extraction/introduction for plenty of air exchange in such a small volume of area. Try and shoot for 5 to 6 foot if at all possible, I know it may not be though. my 0.2 latz, OzGrowa

| well i was thinking even if it is 4 feet tall, this is much better then the 16 inches of grow room i have now... im just going to make it small enough to fit in a corner and house my 100w hps and maybe some flo's on the sides i might throw in. i dunno tho Vee | ||

| k i was thinking, my HPS light is only 7 inches high, and my pots are 11 inches, so if i have a grow room that is 4 feet tall, that would give me 30 inches grow room, this is double the space i have now, would 30" be enough height for a plant to grow???? im sure it would be becuase im only growing with 16 right now... | ||

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | It sounds as you have a good handle on things regarding your situation relating to height. Id like to see some pictures just out of interest if you have a camera? ... you are very resourceful person to grow in such confined height areas ie 16 inches of height!! cool stuff man, very adaptive. Adding some fluros is a good way to increase the f.c level in a situation like yours. latz, OzGrowa

![]() | Sounds like you'd be able to grow in a 4' area. You can also train them puppies (tie the branches down to the pot) That'll slow em down some. That's what I did and it worked just fine ![]() BTW...How's that shagg'n waggen project goen?? ![]() mr g ![]()

![]() | is disguising your box an issue? if you're going to be placing it out in your house somewhere people are prone to see it, you should take the next step and think of what, in your style of house, would make that box look like it fits in? like the iguana cage grow room concept in the MCI forum. not so much like the fishtank with the drapes, (the drapes are kind of a dead giveaway something's inside.. valiant effort tho..) but anyway.. maybe a fake speaker cabinet.. i suggest using a wood frame, not so much 2x4's.. those aren't really indiscrete.. maybe some 2"x2" square strips, joined into a frame.. has to be sturdy to hold up your hps, from there if it's a discrete project, figure out what you're going to disguise it as.. if its not going to be a discrete project, save your money and either buy a roll of mylar or go to home depot..they have a white wood called melamine, pre-sterilized, the depot makes all the cuts however you want it for 50 cents a cut. first cut free. melamine comes 1/4" thick,5/8" or 3/4".. (its what i used for my closet construction).. i used the 1/4" thick piece for the back wall portions to provide support by nailing the 1/4" to the back of my wobbly 3/4" surrounding frame.. works good. use screws for the main frame, i suggest using a wood glue when screwing them in and tapping the holes first.. (clean carpentry baby) ermm.. the only other thing you've got to think about is is intake/exhaust, and access to this box your building.. i'd just make a hinged door that either discretely pulled upward like a garage, or open like a house door. depending where you end up placing this.. lots of fun ideas.. home depot's going to be your haven for this project.. trust me.. ![]() mmm.. 30 inches should be plenty of room to grow.. flower around 12", shouldnt get more than 2 feet. oh, you've got to include in your height, not only the amount of space the hps takes not only from the box, but the heat radius too.. probably want to keep that 100 watt 12" away max. probably get it as close as 2 inches (if you have a glass piece on your reflector). so you may've included that into your conclusive height availability.. what've you come up with so far w/ all the ideas?

| i can put my hand right under my HPS and it doesnt even feel hot, i have a fan blowing on the HPS day and night to keep it cool, plus it is only a 100W. Im going to buy some flo's to place along the side walls of this box. i have thought about making it a bookshelf with a hallow inside and just some small 6" shelfs on the door that would open to the inside, but people might think a 2 foot thick bookshelf with 6 inch shelfs is somthing out of the ordanary, what i plan on doing is just making this box, as it will set right next to my tv. then i will just put my VCR and cable box on top, if anyone ask whats inside ill just say it is a cabinet to keep **** in. also i made a drawing to scale and figured i would need 36 feet of 2"x4"s or 2X2's whatever i get, and 2 sheets of 2'X4', 3'x4', 3'x2' for the walls.... other then that i dont really have too many people comming in my room other then my smoking buddy and he isnt telling a soul, other then that i dont know what else to say cause i cant think of anything to hide the box as(just going to say i use it to store videos and other eletronic stuff, who would be the wiser?)..... i just hope this wood and stuff isnt to spendy or i might have to wait a while before i can build. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | veedub69: I know this is the construction forum, but Im interested int he type of lamp you are using and the results you get from it ? Is it a straight HPS lamp? As where Im from Ive never seen a lamp so small, its a great idea and the fact you have done grows with 16 inches of height really impresses me, any info appreciated. In regards to the construction, a friend of mine has a box he uses for his grow thats around 5 foot tall, he has painted it all black and covered it with stickers and other stuff and put handles on it so it looks like a big amplifier/speaker box, the kind you see at rock concerts on the stage. He even out wheels on it and he can roll it round the house....just an idea. latz, OzGrowa | ||
