OK Hi all..i need some help form the vets. A buddy of mine has an area that is 14 foot x 18 foot with abut 7 foot high cielings. he wants to set up an indoor grow. Can anyone please tell me about how many plants he would be able to hold in that area, and what materials he will need, specifically the lighting, because I know that's a sensitive issue and I don;t want him messing anything up and not having it wired properly and starting a fire. Please anything you can tell me so I can relay this to him would be appreciated, anything such as ventilation and whatever you feel like telling me, thanks.

Your buddy could have a very big grow operation in that space. Sounds like he doesn't know anything about growing really so he'd be better off with just a few plants and one growlight for his first grow. Any of the mistakes he makes (and he will) will not break the bank. We encourage people to grow only enough for themselves and not to set up commercial operations anyway.

Well he is a hillbilly Sort of guy, has a large family, they all smoke. he wants to grow as much as he can now because he thinks he may be using the available space for something else this winter and then he won't be able to grow more.

But can anyone please help me out with proper bulb wattages and types and anything else?

Can a mod maybe move this to another board with more traffic?

Ok for that amount of space he will be looking at hundreds maybe thousands of dollars of lighting for a start. A good idea would be to section off a corner of the room and grow in there with maybe a 400 watt HPS or something. Go simple first, maybe 4 plants or so. Read thru the forums on here and you will find what you need, i did.

Ok,,, in that large of an area he can grow enough to send him down the river long enough for Jethro to look like Ernestien.....

Minimum lighting would be about 5kw (might raise a few red flags in a trailer park, or most sub-divisions) if Barney Fiffe is awake.....

It would be better (IMO, never humble) to just use enough of the space to supply his, friends, and family needs,,, or at least space out the grows so they don't contribute to Jethro's good looks.......

I usually figure 1 square foot per plant, 75% utilization for the grow space, since you need room for equipment etc. So in a 14x18 room you could have about 189 plants, for a total crop yield of between 10-20 pounds.

For lighting on 189 plants you would need 1,890,000 lumens. Thats about 20x1000W HPS bulbs, with vented hoods, environmental controls, CO2 enrichment, I could set it up in about a weeks time for around $20,000. You are looking at monthly electric useage of around 10950 KWh. Now I get my electric for 6.75 cents per KWh, so for me that would be $739.13 a month, that is gonna be really suspicious unless you live in an upper class neighborhood. The general rule is to limit your grow ops impact on your electric bill to 15% or less or 1000W, whichever is more.

two questions
1. is he wanting to sell as well as smoke?

if not then i would board off part of that space, like 8' by 8' and at least a 400 watt hps, better yet 1000 watt, 64 sq. foot, if he wanted to use sea of green tech. then thats 64 plants matured early of course. total costs

plywood 75.00
aluminum foil 10.00
400 watt hps 130.00 online

and if growing was repeted time after time then it would pay for itself in the first 2 harvests
if so then use all available space get 4 1000 watt hps lights and go to town
