Question Any ideas on this concept ?
permalink

Hi there, just had an idea, i have a white shade/reflector which sits above my bulb, the shade itself is a white gloss finish..

i was wondering if covering the reflector with mylar that has a higher reflection rate then the gloss would be a good idea ? i realise that it will proberlly bring the rooms temps up more..

do the benifits (if any) outweigh the bad points ?

Thanks for your insight!

The heat from the bulb may melt it.

Matte finish reflects and scatters light much more uniformly than gloss surfaces.

howdy!

white is a combination of all colors! black is no color.....therefore, white surfaces reflect the same spectrum that hit them- that is why they look white. Mylar is not white, and therefore absorbs some of the spectrum, and reflects all other colors that combine to produce a silver color that you see. this is pretty negligible- but when spectrum matters (like in plant growth) white is better than silver (technically).

as buzzmo sez: Matte is better than gloss because it serves to evenly scatter the light that hits it. imagine shining a laser pointer into a mirror...it would reflect the focused dot back at you - one intense spot.

if you did the same thing with a sandblasted mirror (matte finish) the light reflected would no longer be focused- it would be a feild of evenly scattered red light. this is what ppl mean when they talk about preventing hot spots....

for the record, ive never had a problem with this hot spotting...though you might if you use 1KW lamps?

presumably the finish is white gloss powdercoat? id leave it. it was designed that way for a reason, and will be easy to clean and durable for yrs. to come

peace

Despite mylar appearing silver in color, it is still a more effective reflecting material than white paint. The layer of aluminum causes this coloration, and mylar will reflect all wavelengths of visible light- try shining a flashlight against it; the reflection will be the same color of light.
I agree with buzz; you'd have to check with a temp probe to be sure, but there's a good chance mylar would melt.
