Question Yeast-based CO2 Generator??
permalink

ive got the sugar, yeast, and water. anyone else try this? CO2 is heavier than air, so the output should be over the plants right??

i had one built, but couldn't ever get it to work...I don't think it was hot enough...I believe you ahve to keep the resovoir at around 85 degrees to get it to work...perhaps a fish tank heater will help ya out...

I had mine on top of my cab with the outlet hose running right into one of the passive intakes on top of the back wall of the cab

Have you made beer before? Research brewing and CO2 production. You need VERY little yeast to get things going. Actually, you only need one cell Anyhoo, just adding sugar and water wont work well. The yeast needs proteins. Or you could brew your own beer in the growroom. Perfect temp, trust me

wait...? off topic beverages? yeah well. It's for the plants people! Won't somebody PLEASE think of the plants!

Question Would Cooked maize/hemp produce co2
permalink

I have a Q if ya dont mind?

I use cooked maize and hempseed for fishing bait, i buy them in big 2litre jars, already cooked in their own juices, which retains alot of natural sugars and oils..... when they are opened and air gets in, after a while they will start to ferment, especially the Maize.... im thinking this would produce quite a bit of Co2 during fermentation, would it be enough to benefit my plants in anyway?

Yes, CO2 is heavier than air, so it will sink (assuming that there's no upward air current). I tried to make a CO2 supply from water, champaigne yeast, some sort of urea, and dextrose. It produced CO2 alright, but never built enough pressure to vent itself out of the bucket it was in. I referenced a thread around here, just do a search!

just remember that your cab has to be under certain conditions for co2 to have any beneficial effects...

Yep, like high temperatures (90F) and low RH (35%)

Lightbulb Hola...

I was reading around last night and found a link in someones sig to a site with instructions for a DIY CO2 generator here . The guy tells you how to make it and the ratios to use etc... but for anyone actually going to make one of the things I'd like to point out that you DO want to shake the mix up with the yeast. The site above specifies not to, just because he is a little ignorant. Here's a better site, also explaining why you should shake here .
Quote:
Occasionally you will read on the web or in the newsgroups that you shouldn't shake the bottle to mix the yeast with the water. This is a classic net.non-sense which started with a post in the rec.aquaria newsgroup a few years ago. One guy posted the instructions for a yeast-CO2 set up, and wrote, "Add the yeast to the water, but do not stir or shake the bottle. The instructions from my bread machine explicitly stated this." What he failed to understand was WHY his bread machine instruction was so. Anyone with a bread making machine could see this specific instruction, under the "Delayed Baking" mode. That's the mode where you put the ingredients into the machine, then set the timer and go to bed. Near morning, the machine will automatically turn on and start mixing, kneading and baking, and you will have fresh, hot bread as you get up in the morning. The instruction tells you to put in the water first, then gently put flour on top of the water, then put the yeast on the flour, an DO NOT MIX. That's because they don't want the yeast to get wet and get activated too early, resulting in bread that rises too much.
Mixing it up will start the co2 generation process right away, instead of you sitting waiting for hours thinking, "WHY wont this stupid thing work!?!?"
Just wanted to clarify

This thread is old as hell, but hey, it's exactly what I'm lookin' for. . .

I was thinking of making one of these for my growroom. Figured out what size I would need to make it, and exactly how much sugar, yeast, water, etc. I should be using to get my CO2 levels to between 1200 - 1500 ppm. I was planning on having my exhaust/intake turn off when the lights turn off, but the temps are normally around 70F with lights off. Is this idea pointless, or will my plants benefit from the CO2 that I give them? I've heard that CO2 can only benefits plants at higher temps.
