home made carbon filter
permalink

i am building a carbon filter and here is what i have so far:

2 6" to 4" ducting reducers
screen

i will be using the 4" as the inside peice, and the 6" will be the outside

it is approx 20" long

do i need to put the "high loft quilt batting on both the inside tube and the outside? or will just covering the outside be good? (the pic will explain what im talking about)

also, will a 200 cfm fan be enough to cool my room, and eliminate the odors?
room is 36 cuft

i plan on putting a 6" inline fan in line with the 6" outlet adapter

and, finally... is it more effective to have the fan in my grow room and the filter out of it, forcing the air from the middle out, or should the be outside the room, with the filter in it, sucking air from outside the filter in? (let me know if that didnt make sense)

after more reading other posts, i have decided to put 2 layers of panty hose (each leg of 1 pair) on the inside can, and wrap high loft quilt batting on the outside can

to fill it, i will simply remove 1 of the outer clamps (not in place yet) and loosen the screen until theres enough room to fill it

nice.. but it cant be open on both ends like that.. or air is not gonna pass thru the scrubber part

you need to replace one of those reducers you have on the ends with a 4'' end cap

Here is a pic of a carbon filter with the end cap in place..just to show you exactly what MightyNugs meant..he is right!

I would think that since you are growing in a whole room and not in an enclosed box the filter would have to be outside the room. You would need some type of ducting connecting the room to the filter.

If you install the fliter in the grow room, then I don't see how it could possibly clean all the air.

Have you thought of constructing a grow box? I would recommend to you that you check into it. IT's much more easier to control odors and climate that way.

the corner of my closet is blocked off by tarp and velcro, so very little air will escape un filtered

dood... dont say its not feasible

that is just a very lame excuse to avoid putting some work into doing it right.. saying it isnt feasible means that for some reason placing a cab in your place is impossible... that is an ignorant statement.. since you custom make your cab and they can be made to fit about anywhere.. you could say i cant affford to build a cab but thats pretty lame too.. you can build it for very cheap

growing indoors under a tarp is not feasible.. coz this filter is going to do very little for you if you dont build a proper cab first or seal off the whole closet with proper ventilation... a tarp and velcro won't do sh!t to keep air contained... and without any REAL containment or ventilation than an ozone generator (which would cost more than the carbon filter AND the cost of building a cab) is the only way to keep odor under control in your situation

theres 1001 reasons to build a cab.. it can be any size you want and it can be placed anywhere.. including your apartment :P but i have beat this one to death with you.. all ill say is that if your not prepared to put a little bit of effort into it, then dont expect much.. and definately don't expect that filter to do much for ya

the reason i cant have a cabinet, is because i do not have the tools to build one, i cant be carrying wood into my second floor apartment room, and, i do not have anywhere to put it

there is a shelf in my closet, that i cant remove, so i cant put a cab in there

theres just no room

You can buy a regular cabinet and convert it into your needs..surely someone you know owns tools? Tell them you are installing shelves or a closet organizer, there are tons of excuses.

You won't need wood with store bought cabinet/armoire, so there is nothing big and hard to hide to carry upstairs. Bringing up a piece of furniture is very normal. You can hide drills, hammers, etc in a backpack or whatever.

Come on man, just use your imagination and you'll discover how many possibilites there really are!

And being in this apartment buliding where brinnging wood in is suspicious, you might want to think twice about growing and not being properly setup. (Meaning grow cabinet, filtration, etc) If you leak out smells you are going to have far more problems than someone confronting you about a piece of plywood.

LAME bro... tools are cheap too.. and you dont need anything other than normal household tools that everyone should have anyway.. IMO... the point is they too are very cheap

what? it's illegal to carry wood where you live? home projects aren't allowed? you need a contractor to build a couple shelves??

then use a premade cab like rocky sugested.. less tools involved too :P

complete and total BS dood... like i said.. you can make it any size TO SUIT YOUR NEEDS... and if you have room to grow.. then you have room for a cab. no buts about it.

so you can get a cab and do it proper... or you can spend alot on an ozone generator to control odor now, which is just a bandaid.. or quick fix.. and as you get experienced you will end up spending more to make a cab anyway

do it how ya want.. im just speakin from experience and tryin to save ya ALOT of trouble and money...

no doubt.. and again there is no freakin way you will be able to control odor with a diy filter if you cant control ventilation

using a tarp and velcro will not be sufficient to control your ventilation... so your gonna be leakin smell
