Flower Room Upgrade
permalink

After 2 months of planning I finally started the project. The flower room is located in a very large closet behind my bed. The closet is 3'W x 10'L x 4.5'T. The roof is slanted and is 48" at its shortest and 62" at the peak. I partitioned off the back of the closet making a room 40"L x 32"W x 4.5'T. I have my Veg cab located at the other end of the closet.

I basically did a real half ass job building this room several months ago. As you can see it's a mess.

Goals for the upgrade:

1) Reduce noise from grow room. (because the closet is behind the bed this causes a problem at night)

2) Maxamize space to achieve the best yield.

3) Add a 250W MH for dual spectrum lighting.

4) Improve ventalation to handle the 2nd light and carbon filter.

5) Improve odor control.

6) Install a system to raise and lower plants.

7) Add a 2nd breaker and improve electrical system.

The first thing to do was empty out the grow room of the plants. I have my lights on at 9:00 PM and off at 9:00 AM so I had to move all the plants to another closet for the dark period. I proceeded to take the mylar off the walls and removed the light.

I had old bath towels on the floor to soak up any spills and to help soften the vibrations of the fans. I took them out and swept the floor out.

I should take a second to explain the ventalation system I am using. I was using 2 4" exhaust fans I would guess they moved about 100cfm each. I had 1 blowing through the cool tube in 4" ducting then through the wall in a 2" PVC pipe. The other fan was sitting on the floor of the cab pulling air from the cab and going throung the wall in a 2" PVC pipe. After going through the wall the 2" pipes go through our wooden bed frame. By doing this I was able to easily exhaust into our room while keeping it stealth. In addition we were also able to use the heat from the grow room to make our bedroom warmer. This enabled us to keep the heat lower at night saving money on oil.

The first change I made to this system was to remove the 2" PVC and expand the holes to 4" each. I used a register duct to funnel the 2 4" ducts into a 6" end for a scrubber. I ran the 2 exhaust ducts half way up the inside wall and secured them to the wall. I hung a small stanley blower from the roof this will be pulling hot air from the topp of the room and blowing it through the cool tube and out. I hung one of the 4" fans from the roof in front of the door. This fan will be hung at canopy level to exhaust hot air from the plants.

After changing the ventalation I installed reflectix insulation inside the grow room. I used this because it will give me better sound insulation and is much more sturdy than mylar. Then I attached clear plastic sheeting to the floor to protect from water spills or leaks.

I hung the HPS back up last night and moved the plants back in for their light period. Then moved them back out this morning so I can complete the project. I will keep you all updated.

I installed a 2nd 20 amp breaker this morning. I have 1 dedicated to the flower room and the other to the veg cab. The one for the flower cab is going into a heavy duty 20 amp timer. This way I can have everything except 1 exhaust fan all operating on 12/12.

I ordered a dual bulb hood that has a unique air cooled system. It looks like this It cools the reflector by passing air over it and therefore draws heat up. I'm sure it won't work as well as a hood with glass and direct ventalation but we'll see.

I setup the 250W MH in there for now to see what the temp is going to be. I also added an active intake fan at the bottom of the door to help with ventalation. I am planning on running the system for the next couple of hours to see the temp change.

Hey ya, ecs, damn nice grow set up man. The heat will help your heating bill, my set up always did.
I see you opt for mechanical intakes. The only time I ran an intake, I only used it a while, it was to noisey, so I shut it off, and once I removed it, and added a grill, I got the same cooling effect. But you know your set up, and whats good for me may not be for thee!! Best to ya man, I hope you get double your expectations!!

Here is what the room looked like a couple of days ago:

I still have not received my reflector yet. I'm getting more than a little frustrated with the company it's been a month since I ordered it. So I did some more temprorary alterations today to maximise space and lighting. I took out the shelf and lowered the HPS in the cooltube. Hopefully this will help fill out the bottoms of the plants better. I am going away for a few days again so I need to make sure there is enough room and light for all the ladies.

I picked up a kick ass blower from a central air system. It has to move atleast 400cfm.

I attached a 4"-3" reducer to the exhaust giving me a 4" end to hook up to. I also attached a 5"-4" reducer to the intake giving me a 4" intake as well. As soon as the reflector gets here I am planning to replace all other exhaust with this blower. I know with this I will finally be able to hook up my carbon filter without killing the airflow. It is louder than the stanley but not bad for the amount of air it moves.

Thanks for the encouraging words.

Well it seems as though I am being screwed by the company I bought the dual bulb reflector from so it's time for a change in plans. Right now I am running a 400W HPS in a cool tube and a 100W flourex hanging low to give some light to the bottom of the plants. This is a temporary solution, as you can see I was planning on running a 400W HPS and a 250W MH in a dual bulb hood.

I would like some feedback on this idea.

I am now considering adding a 2nd 400W HPS in a cooltube giving me 2 400W HPS. I have a grow area of 9 sqft so 800W will be good. What I really wanted to do was have a multi spectrum lighting system with the HPS and MH, but it seems that a 250W MH bulb doesn't fit very well inside of a bake around and I'm not going to shell out another 120$ for a dual bulb hood. Do you guys think 2 400W HPS will be better than the dual spectrum plan I had before? Obviously I know that the added wattage will be better I am just wondering how valuble the dual spectrum theory is?

IMHO option not very, I've always been very happy with an all HPS setup. 800w in your area and you will very pleased with the turn out. Looks like you have the heat under control is go for it. The 2 seperate hoods will let you position the light and plants much better too. One side can be higher than the other and not make any plant stretch for the light
