Bubbler Bucket Construction

Other than a plant, water and nutrients, this is what you need to start bubbling. I believe you also need the testing equipment, but not everyone agrees.

This will work if you have all the other parts of room taken care of-lighting, ventilation, temp, humidity, etc.

Parts
Net pots. The large ones.
1” rockwool cubes. You can use other items.
Hydroton or Lava rocks. Most people use hydroton and I'm changing to lava rocks. You can get these in the garden section of the hardware store.
Some sort of container with a lid. A 5 gallon bucket from the hardware store. Check the paint section.
Air pump. The two outlet pump from Wal-Mart’s pet section. This is used to pump air into the water in the bucket.
Air line. Black tubing from the garden section of the hardware store. It's used for drip systems. This is used to direct the air into the water in the buckets.
Air stones. The ones from the pet section of Wal-Mart. Used to break up the air from the air pump into little bubbles. I like the cheap ones and replace them after harvesting a plant, otherwise they will fall apart before they finish another round.
Something to cover the containers with to keep all light out of the water. I use heavy duty plastic, white on one side and black on the other that I got from the hydro store and there are many other things that will work, just make sure there is NO light getting into the water in the container. Now I wrap things so the white side is out, unlike the picture.


Construction
Cut holes in the lid. Cut one in the middle to put the net pot in, one to access the water to take readings and make additions to the res. And lastly 2 holes for the two air lines.
Cover bucket.
Assemble parts.

This is a picture of my veg area today. As you can see, I place the air pump on the lid of the bucket. This eliminates many problems when you have with the pump placed on the floor.

I've seen many gardeners having troubles with their reservoirs and I don't understand. You keep the light out, temps in check and the bad stuff stays out, right? Anyway, I wanted to give a little more detail on how I do my buckets since I've never had root troubles.

The part I left out was what to do once the bucket is assembled and the plant added. A little square goes on first. It's just the size of the net pot with a small hole cut in the center for the main stem. This eliminates light getting through the pot to the water. Then I cover the entire lid with a sheet of the black and white plastic. It also has a hole cut for the stem but it's bigger than the little square. This eliminates light getting through the lid. There is also a slit on both pieces of plastic to ease installation.

One more thing. Make sure you have the black air line tubing! I got mine in the gardening section of Home Depot. They sell the black for use in outdoor gardens.

Quick question: What sort of tool do you use to cut the hole in the lid? Ive done several lids with just a knife and it's f@*king irritating and I've crapped many lids doing it. The circular bits for the drill costs like $40 at HD! Is there an easier way?

harbor freight... or many hobby/craft stores have a circle cutter. basically a compass with an xacto blade instead of a pencil. it will take several trips around the lid to get the cut deep enough, but she works like a charm. there about 5-10 bucks typically

I just use a standard drill bit to drill a starting hole to get the jig saw in. Hack saw would work also
