DIY carbon filter
permalink

I need to build my first carbon filter and the place I found sells in 55 lb bags. They asked me which type, coconut shell based or carbon base? Should I get granular, or pellitized? If you have a DIY filter please tell me your thoughts on this, thanks. Nature

Im using pellitized coco carbon in a DIY filter. Although I've heard typical carbon works better and longer, I have no proof to support or deny it. I can say that the coco in a 1.5" layer effectively and totally removes the odor of any plant I put in flower.

Your carbon layer needs to be between 1.5" thick and 2" thick. You can make it only 1" thick, but thats only good for low air flow systems, and will require more frequent changing. Im in month 2 of the 1.5" layer and its still 100% effective.

Be sure to rinse the carbon before use. it gets dusty in transit and that dust will go everywhere as soon as air hits it. Makes for some real nasty black buggers too.

What is the carbon filter used for? Is it for filtering the runooff/catchment?
If so,would charcoal work as well? I can buy 20 litrebuckets of sterilized premium oak charcoal really cheap.I can get them from my brew shop supplier. It`s used to filter Jack Daniels, yes, and it`s the real stuff. It filters high proof spirit brilliantly. So water shouldn`t be a prob. It`s non toxic and the minerals that it contains should do plants a world of good, better than pot ash, purer.
Would that work or help you out in any way?

The application of carbon here is for cleaning air of odor, not water of impurities.

I want to add one point to n_d_shadows comments: thickness of carbon layer must be in correspondence with the size of the carbon's surface, and both with the flow and pressure of the fan.

For a carbon filter conected with exhausting, its necessary to use less tickness or surface, or the fan perfomance will suffer too much, while a scruber may use a thicker/larger surface layer, due to as lower the speed of the air passing through the carbon, higer the odor absortion.
