Usually my tap roots grow a lot longer before they start to pop from their shell. I didn't do anything different this time but the tap root is only 1 cm and the shell is opening almost all the way. Take a look...

Should I help it out of its shell and lining and just plant it?

A Quick Question Concerning Old Seeds

If one successfully pops an old seed (six or seven years old), is there any reason to believe that the plant itself will not be as healthy or as vital? Or perhaps more subject to mutation? Or...once you get the seed to pop, it's just like any other seed? Naturally, I'd like the answer to be the latter.but what say this august group? (I have some old BOG and Spice of Life seeds that I'm considering making a run at to see if they are still viable.)

(If I've asked this question before...I'm sorry, I can't find the answer...Or forgot it. Friggin' stoners!!!)

Paper Towel Method: How Wet is Wet Enough?

I had the chance to talk to a man who tests seed germination rates for a living. One of the questions I had was about moisture in paper towels. They have developed a recipe that is basically done by weight.

Take paper towels, weigh them. Add water in a 2:1 weight ratio. So if your PTs weigh 10g, put in 20ml water (1ml H2O = 1gm weight).

This eliminates eyeballing and guessing. -CR
