![]() | hey guys....wondering if their is anyway possible to stop a bank from eroding that has a grade of 70-80 degrees. at the base of the bank, their is a 10-15 foot river that is eating away at it i planted a small bamboo tree there hoping that its roots would spread...that was back in the summer of 06....it seems to be alive, but not spreading yet so i suppose my question is, is there a plant with deep roots that will grow quick enough that the seeds wont be wiped away with the next storm(the top soil of the bank seems to wash away with every hurricane...I'm on the east coast...) i thought about putting some sort of ground netting down till the roots take hold...to try to keep the dirt intact

![]() | i dont think there is going to be an "easy" way of stopping it, like you said some ground netting until the plants get sorted might stop it, other than that the only other resort would be something more permanent like a wall of some kind

I'd build a wall there. Or maybe chuck some timbers down there, with posts on the water side. I wouldn't use plants as a structural feature myself, but others may have alternative ideas, but if you want shoring to last you've usually got to do it mechanically. How long a stretch of bank are we looking at?

Depends on how much work you want to put in. Lining the bank with rocks will slow the water from eating the bank. Depending on your DNR (if you have one) they will have code what you can and can't line the shore with. Some states let you use pieces of concrete. Timber would help also. The key would be to putting something in-between the dirt and the water, that is not erode able. But Bluecheese maybe right. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() | it really depends how much you wanna put into it. if youre near woods you can collect some wood and construct some groynes by nailing large stakes into the ground (a type of micropile for you engineers out there) then you could weave in some sturdy twigs inbetween the stakes to create a wall. that will stop erosion behind the wall, but it will increase erosion further down stream. if you want it to work better you could dig a channel 1ft deep where the stakes go in and bury your wall slightly. hit me up if you want some more info. that scheme could be implemented with a bit of rope, a hammer, a sharp knife and saw and some elbow grease. bear in mind whatever you do to reduce erosion on your end, will cause erosion problems or amplify erosion problems further down stream.
