My resource for this knowledge is a group of Army Captains through Colonels as well as a General from the Lebanese army. Again, this doesn't pertain to the California Poppy. Well, it will give some people a rash. The Mexican Poppy is a bit worse than the California Poppy but it isn't as bad as what they grow in Afghanistan.

Dude, for real, go research it yourself, if those guys even did tell you that it was probably just to make you want to stay away from them and the drugs contained within.. What they grow in afganistan is the papaver somnifurum, the opium poppy, seeds from those poppies are sold and distributed all across the world, you've probably eaten them yourself if you ever had any pastries or bread with tiny round seeds all over them. the seeds will not harm you, i repeat, the seeds will not harm you.
there is no need to back away from the seeds. the seeds are your friend.

I shouldn't have said the word seed; I think that is confusing some people. It is actually the flower, not the dried seed.

Poppies as an irritant. The info suggests that dermatitis is a common reaction to the sap of poppies, but death is not a result of touching the flowers.

I believe they use gloves when colecting the sap, by scraping a bit the bud (traditional afghan way).

Beatifull plants anyway, there is a lot of it growing wild in my area. I love them, and i know many people having it in their gardens without knowing anything about its alcaloids. Especially the short ones with red flowers, they are so nice!

knna

PS: As noted, this forum isnt the one to discuss the use of opiates

Okay then. Looks like thats settled, thanks knna, so does anyone have any questions about growing poppies? I'll try to help if you do, i did a bunch of research and I have some grown that'll be ready for harvest in a couple weeks, they are dick easy to grow, i litaraly just threw an assload of seeds is some semi-remote location i thought nobody would bother them and went back 3 months later to see if anything happened. thats it. thats all i did. only about 20 of them grew, but i just threw them on the ground, if you tilled your soil you would get a much better germination rate. Here's some pics again of the final results.

As i said they grow wild in my area. Its difficult to me not find a bunch of them when walking near my house. So probably is my climate and soil what does them grow so well, but i know very little plants wich demand so little to grow. They adapt fine to rocky and poor soils, dont need excess water, although those in a well watered garden grows awesome with brilliant flowers. Need little nutes, too.

Just throw some seeds and wait, no need of any special care. But maybe on other climates is more difficult
