yeah its pretty crazy, they are like weeds in a sense, i've read they grow best in cooler climates, like with 60 or 70 degree weather, but they will grow just about anywhere, you saw my pics, there's a ton of other weeds and grass and whatever all in and around them, they really don't need much, i think those conditions would choke out MJ it was funny cuz i check on them like month after i tossed the seeds and i saw absolutely nothing, i figured owell, i really didn;t expect much anyway, then 2 and a half months later I was going for a walk and figured I'd go check out the spot just for the hell of it, and whala, poppies.

I hear they grow around the Emerald City.

Scarification in coarse sand aids germination is what I hear.

I didn't know moles liked poppies, as a matter of fact, me and a friend were having a conversation last night about why the poppie makes opium, and my guess was so that animals wouldn't eat it, i mean, it tastes horrible. Anyway, they sell mole repellent and crap you can pour down their holes. You could also try mouse or rat traps, and if you like cats you can keep one around the area. Thats what my parents eventually did and it kept them under control.

Like feral hemp, the whole Poppy family is ruderal. You can just broadcast it on disturbed soil in early spring and it will compete pretty well with the other weeds that want to colonize. They are great for vacant lots, around construction sites, etc.

It's good to mix the seeds with sand, that helps provide more even distribution and also helps scarify the seed coat.

I mixed with some seed starter just to be able to spread, sand does sound like a better idea though, i'll have to try it, i tossed my seeds partly into a grassy area and partly on a rocky compact soil area, i know that wasn't the best way, but it was really the only option i had, anyway i hear you can spread seed in the fall, do you think you would get a better germination rate since the seeds would have all year long to work into the soil? And I'm asking this because i just want the throw seeds in random areas, i'm not planning to plant in my backyard were i can give optimal conditions. Thanks.

any poppy seeds you buy at a grocery store or pick off your bagles have been sterilized and have about a .001 germination rate FYI
