Cacti

It's funny, we move overseas and the first things we buy are plants.
Instead of "Christmas Cactus" they call it a "Danish Cactus", and it flowered in August.

Though, coming from the US, parts of Asia have the same climate and plants.http://www.gardenscure.com/420/imagehosting/thum_50403473d28924728b.jpg

I was just doing research on growing a pineapple plant, after seeing these beautiful pictures, when I ran across the following. I wasn't sure if it would help anybody so I thought that I would pass it on:

Forcing your plant [to flower]

To force your plant, place a small lump of calcium carbide about the size of your little fingernail in the center of your plant and pour a quarter cup of water over it. This will release acetylene gas which will force your plant to flower. To improve your chances of success, it is best to treat your plant in the evening after the sun goes down and temperatures are cooler. (Calcium carbide may be obtainable at a welding shop, garden store, pharmacy or toy store.) You can also 'force' a plant by enclosing it completely in a polyethylene bag together with two ripe apples for one week. The ethylene gas released from the ripe apples will do the trick.

How to Grow Pineapple

Thats great stuff skierguy.......... Funnny thing, a client gave me my first pineapple plant who had several beautifull plants, said that while storing his pineaples in the garage for the winter, noticed he started to get double even tripple blooms on his pineapples......... He was told it was due to a propane leak on his gas grill next to the plants...... .... Interesting........ Another note: we used to call calcium carbide "spit rock" when I was a kid, LOL, cause you could spit on it and light it on fire....... Be safe & Grow on.....

did he really say toy store? sounds dangerous. although i am intrigued. I have a pineapple plant just starting to grow. It has put out a 3" secondary that I assume will overtake the original top. How many years to get to maturity and i can begin my hunt for calcium carbide?

also.. when i walk into the pharmacy do i just say "i need some calcium carbide to force flower my pineapple plant?" if its that simple, im game. do they give you business over buying it.. like do "terrorists" ever buy it?

Awesome pictures seedsplitter and that's for that bit of information skierguy. I have another plant that I'll have to try to force to flower now and mine is just getting the flowers on them, which before that picture seedsplitter I really had no idea they did that. I thought I heard it was like 2 years for a pineapple plant to mature, but mine was like 3 years I thought before it flowered. Will update with pictues whenever I find my camera again.

Happy Growing

Ok weekly shots wouldn't of shown all that much growth, but a month later and I think you can see it pretty well. This is today.
