Truer words have never been spoken. I have blooms right now, under 1200W (in this room) of HPS running 18/6. It is time to get her outside. I just got back from a business trip and I was excited to see them. I was disappointed to see that my wife hasn't watered them since I left. They still grew quite a bit but that is because I gave them double strength nutes, and saturated them, before I left.

I ordered baby tomato plants instead of seeds from Laurel's Heirloom Tomato Plants and got a bunch of dark varieties:
Carbon (super super dark)
Cherokee Chocolate
and Paul Robeson
They're supposed to ship as soon as the weather conditions are good for planting in my region, but I did just get a yellow pear and some other generic beefsteak into the cold frame my friend and I made, an I'm hoping it's enough to guard against the chilly nights up where I'm at.
Goodluck with yer tomato attempt Analog, hope to hear how they get goin.

I had over 50 tomato plants I was hardening off. They were outside in a cold frame. Apparently a strong gust of wind kicked up during the night and knocked the cold frame over. And wouldn't you know it, we had a hard freeze last night. All dead! The average last frost date in the area is SUPPOSED to be April 5th.

I had Delicious, Old German, German Striped, and Mortgage Lifter.

I do have other seeds planted waiting to sprout but I was hoping to get a jump on the garden this year. My neighbors planted an early garden and had many small seedlings. I bet they lost them all. The weather reports weren't calling for freezing temps so I bet they didn't prepare.

Waiting to sprout are AMish Paste, Roma, Cherokee Purple, Green Zebra, and a few more heirlooms I can't remember at the moment.

wow SS, that really sucks! ...i'm sorry to hear about your loss.

I put my tomatoes out yesterday even though it's 3 weeks before our frost free date (May 15th). It's been such a mild winter in my area that i figured i'd give it a shot...and if there is a freeze warning i'll have to run around like crazy and cover them all up.

peace,
- eyes88

...i had to replant mine because of --->

i thought they only eat the fruit. My bad, they ate all but one plant down to the soil level.

I was planning to put up a deer fence because i know from painful past experiences that deer love :mj:, so i was planning to put up a fence. However, we've had such a mild winter around these parts that i thought i'd give the tomatoes a head start. Now there's a fence and the clones are going to be joining in a few days.

i have two grape cherry tomatoes, a big boy, two better boys, and an heirloom yellow tomato.

good luck

peace,
-eyes88

...my cherry tomatoes are about 10-12 inches tall and have flowers already. The others typically need to be almost double 20 inches? ...and i think hrs. of sun light also factors but not like a driving force as it is with :mj:
