However, we've had such a mild winter around these parts that i thought i'd give the tomatoes a head start. Now there's a fence and the clones are going to be joining in a few days.

i have two grape cherry tomatoes, a big boy, two better boys, and an heirloom yellow tomato.

good luck

Hey eyes88,
My buddy found a system for deer. It's a high powered sprinkler system and electric eye. When the deer come the eye senses them and turns on the sprinklers. The sprinklers scare the deer away. Hope that helps..sounds easier than a deer fence.

Thanks Crazytrain!

...i've actually heard of those things but never really paid them much attention...i figured they were just a gimmick or something. It's nice to know that they actually work...thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to check it out.

i've already put up a deer fence (around were the tomatoes and are going), but the deer have pretty much determined what types of plants and flowers we can grow away in the yard...so it sounds like i could definitely still use a couple.

Here's a picture of the deer fence that i put up after the deer got my first round of tomatoes. The fence goes around the 1st and 2nd levels and is 7 ft tall. The 3rd level has only garlic and the deer don't touch that, so i left it open. I replanted the tomatoes and they are already growing nicely. I plan to place two or three plants in between the tomotoes (probably 2 on the 2nd level and 1 on the 1st level.

thanks,
- eyes88

Hey Slowdown, that will depend in if your tomatoes are determinate or indeterminate varieties. It should say on the name tag there. Here's an explanation of what indeterminate vs. determinate varieties are.

Anyways, here's my lineup for the season. From left to right I've got Carbon, Black Krim, Sara Black, and Cherokee Chocolate. It's gonna be a dark harvest this season, I'm hopin' fer purple tomatoes and purple buds They'll be goin into the coldframe on Thursday and hopefully into the ground soon thereafter. Zone 5a just hit the avg frost free date so I'm hopin fer some luck.

Read this great article today about a guy in the San Fernando Valley that grows tomatoes:

GenGreen Life - You say tomato; so does he

his blog is here:

Tomatoes!

OD if you're out there he had something very nice to say about Taxi, that you mentioned to me.

I'm going to start indoors like last year but get them nice and big and put them outside earlier than I did last year (April 15) - and not top them this time - and in much bigger containers. 5 gallon containers I hope.

Oh and shake the flowers next year no more hoping something else does the pollination.

Well the tomatoes are all harvested .

Improvement for next year:

bigger container = 5 gallons.

more perlite

better pollination (shake shake shake)

start earlier (started mid April)

no pruning.

Taste tests are positive .

Maybe next year some cukes, I want to make pickles~! I'm a pickle fanatic . Would like some peppers too.

Did I ever mention my mother in law has a greenhouse?!

Your tomato plants look so healthy for this time of year...
Mold is over taking my tomatoes... I've quit paying attention to the vegetable
garden in favor of trimming. (well maybe "in favor" is not the right expression)

You want hot weather vegetables, tomatoe, cukes and peppers... A greenhouse
effect of some sort needs to be created or you need to find varieties conducive
to your cool climate to grow them.

I plan to start my tomatoes in January this year... Shall I remind you?

Good job Analog, eating your own maters! Have you made a BLT yet? That's
my favorite along with toast, a little mayo and sliced tomato, open face. Yummmy.

I recommend solid gold tomato too, a late cherry tomato that is so sweet, orange
and grows like grapes... Beautiful right now.

Your notes are perfect!

Peace- OD
