Blackberries and Blueberries

Does anyone have any idea how i could go about growing these plants inside? My main concern is photoperiod. If im not mistaken, blackberries are perennial and grow biennial canes. So one year the stem grows and grows, and the next year it flowers. How can i achieve this indoors? OR can it even be done?

Never grown blueberries, but we have wild blackberries where I live. Once a year they fruit, miles back on a nature trail. The thorns suck and the bushes are pretty big... they'd be hard to contain indoors I'd think. They fruit in the late summer if I remember right, so I'm not sure what kind of light cycle would be necessary indoors. I've thought about growing them in my backyard

Hmmm. I doubt it can be done with much success. Might be an interesting experiment though. I have grown blueberries, boysenberries and have lots of wild blackberries. You would need some sort of trellising system for the brambles that might not be practical indoors.

I believe, though am not certain, that you would also have to give them an adequate cold dormant period. Indoors may be too warm. They also like very acidic soil similar to azaleas. Brambles like slightly acidic soil.

there are more used to a outdoor climate and im sure would grow just fine in your front yard, i have 5 bushes that did fine and are still doing fine dispite all the bad weather ive had. So planting outdoors would be almost easy.

I dunno my blueberry bushes are 4-6 feet tall at 2 yrs old.
blackberries take a lot of room.... brambles and all...
Though I'll bet there are varieties out there that are without thorns and maybe some suited to hydro....

I dont know a damn thing about blueberries, i dont even know what one of the plants looks like. My grandfather grows a lot of blackberries on his farm. I always fill up a big bucket when i get the chance, good stuff. Some of his plants are huge and thorny, while others are pretty small. I'm sure i could find a variety that would work out indoors. Space is not really an issue.

I was wondering if they need to go through a cold dormant period. Not having any luck trying to figure this out. It already sounds like a pain, but i think i might give it a shot.

Edit: Just looked it up and the canes do need to be chilled to become dormant.

it is not a project I would undertake, but research suggests that with a properly controlled photoperiod, long days short nights, can eliminate the need for vernalization( cold treatment).

I didn't know changing the plant's photoperiod could replace vernalization. Interesting.

I think it's strange that blackberries grow where I live, since it barely gets cold at all in the winter.
