Ferrets and squirrels?
permalink

Hi everyone. I have some vegetables growing outdoors right now and am trying to keep the squirrels away from them. A friend of mine suggested that I take my ferrets for a walk in the area around the plants. She says the squirrels will avoid the area then. I was thinking I could take it a step farther then and place a towel from their cage near the plants as well. After a couple days in their cage, a towel usually has a pretty concentrated odor. LOL. Has anyone here heard of this and know if it will work?

P.S. Sorry my first post isn't about my MJ plants, but for once, they're aren't giving me problems. Thank you Hempy!

Also, I just want to say that I think Gardens Cure is going to be my new MJ home if noone minds. This is by far the most mature board with helpful members I've come across. Ok, I'll shut up now. Back to the ferret and squirrel issue...

Welcome, Catnip. It certainly sounds logical, and ferrets sure give off plenty of scent, sounds worth a try. I used to grow tomatos and peppers on an apartment balcony, the squirrels were relentless. I used to set a dozen mousetraps in them. It'd scare them off for a while, but they always came back. Squirrels are worse than rats, IMO

Unfortunately, the situation is partially my own fault. When we first moved in I fed them frequently without thinking about the consequence to my planting this year. I especially couldn't help myself when they had babies. They were so small and cute! Now I have to undo the damage. LOL.

this might deter them, depening on how much the squirres fear feretts and if the prize very great, it wont much, specially when they check out and see no ferrets only scent.

but worth a try, maybe out the ferrets on watch duty?

lots of folks guard their plots this way and with great sucess so why. not

Hahaha! Make them work for their food and board! I'm not so sure that would work though. One is so lazy a squirrel could probably curl up with him and nap without him caring. The other one is Trouble. I don't know what mischief he might get into, but I'm positive he'd find something bad to do.

Maybe I could make some stuffed ferret scarecrows. Or would that be scaresquirrels?

Oooh, a squirrel master! Just what I need. Could you please tell your little minions to leave my veges alone?!

Umm... shaving them seems a little drastic. They might scare my cats....or me....

Well ever since the squirrels have dug a hotel into my attic I started using rocket launchers and hand grenades. This seems to be the most effective solution.

P.S. I have two ferrets too, Bob and Jimi ( named after two of the greats )

max and angel are my little ones. one day max got outta the cage and crawled out of the window of a house i use to rent. he was on what was the front porches' roof if you could imagine it. i walked upstairs and was lookin' for him all over the room. i heard noises coming from out the window and he and a squirrel were fighting. needlessto say, the squirrel's pride was hurt. max was okay and the squirrel was a little shaken. so yes.....ferrets will keep the squirrels at bay.

Did the ferret towel work? I have a plethra of ferret scented things (I have two geriatric ones), and plenty of squirrel neighbors.
