Question How to clone Alocasia (elephant ear)
permalink

Does anyone know the best way to go about this? I have two diff. kind growing on my front steps in containers and would like to clone them for the new window box I made for inside. I believe the ones I have are "Black Velvet" and "Esculenta". Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Ok well, the plants are not the above. Those little tags that they put in the pots can be a little off sometimes I guess.... So, after about 30mins on Google, they are Alocasia "polly"/"African Mask", and my fav is Colocasia Illustris. But I still cant find any info on propagating these beauts.

"Illustris"

"Polly"-"African Mask"

there is what looks like a big nut in the ground

dig it up and split it vertically

replant

would best be done before the new tips emerge from the soil in the early spring

mine are just nubbing at the surface

Here's some general info. The underground structures are rhizomes and it is relatively easy to divide one with a sharp shovel or knife.

Thanks for the info peeps! There are some little "shoots" coming off from the main plant right under the soil that have their own little leaf. I think I am going to try and cut one of the smallest ones and try to root it. And if that dont work, looks like I will have to wait untill the frost. Thanks again!
