watermelons..?
permalink

i know this may be a dumb question, and i know that watermelons are fairly easy to grow and are really abundant....but i was lookin on ebay and around the net, and everyones only selling seeds....anyone know if theres any kind of market for sprouts, are there people that grow watermelons in greenhouses? i know theyre huge...

you see, the thing is, i spit a few seeds out in the garden where we are gonna plant some herbs, and was joking wit my girl about whether or not they would sprout, and they did....so the first thing i thought was to sprout a bunch of em and try to sell little babies to make some money...the completed listings on ebay wasnt very promising as far as watermelons went, so i decided id come ask some of you people on here who may be in on the gardening tip as far as the market goes and whatnot....

like i said, this may be an off the wall idea, but i just had to ask...thanks for any thoughts and comments...

you can buy viable seeds in bulk cheaper than extracting your own from watermelon...there's better plants to grow for $$

if you want to make money growing water melon, figure out how to grow these.

from here

TOKYO — A jumbo black watermelon auctioned in Japan on Friday fetched a record $6,100, making it one of the most expensive watermelons ever sold in the country.

In a society where melons are a luxury item commonly given as gifts, the watermelon's hefty price tag followed another jaw-dropping auction last month, when a pair of "Yubari" cantaloupe melons sold for a record $23,500.

The 17-pound, black-skinned "Densuke" watermelon, a variety grown only on the northern island of Hokkaido, was purchased Friday by a marine products dealer who said he wanted to support local agriculture, according to Kyodo News agency.

The price was the highest on record for a Densuke watermelon, said Kazuyoshi Ohira, a spokesman for the Tohma Agricultural Cooperative in Hokkaido. Most retail at department stores and supermarkets for a more modest $188 to $283, Ohira said.

And what makes a watermelon worth $200, much less $6,000?

Ohira says it's the unusual black skin and unparalleled taste. "It's a watermelon, but it's not the same," he said.

Watermelon seedlings also grow very quickly. They can outgrow a small container in a couple of days. Not really a plant that is suited to selling as a seedling.

I am so sorry that I edited your post, surfbum. I forgot you were talking about growing watermelons.

I just came back from a trip to S FL and I stopped in on the old surf spot on South Beach. Things changed in 40 years. They really screwed up the break when they "renourished" the beach. We used to run to the pier at S. Beach from Homestead and surf all day. I was talking to some of the locals there and they thought I was crazy when I was telling them about the surf there many moons ago.

its all good, i thought after i posted it i might get some static, but i figured it'd be ok...yeah i got all kind of prospectful fruits n veggies goin out in the yard. workin on a decent little greenhouse plan right now to grow through the winter...might even put a little stealth cab in the back of it haha..

yeah they do alot of dredging here that screws with the sandbars...theyre never the same anymore...i was reading a while back that theyre talkin about doin some renourishing out in cali that would mess up a couple big name breaks..i think its surfrider thats in a big legal dispute with the city out there..they dont care about us surfers. but then again, here in mayport they are talking of sinkin some ships and putting an artificial reef right offshore that may add a sweet break out there..that'd be nice...oh how i miss it, ive been trying to avoid talkin bout it since its so flat here, and the only hope of waves is just now comin off the coast of africa...
