tomato plant question

I was talking to my dad this morning and suggested next time maybe he should top his tomato plants so they don't get 8 feet tall and he said he was told long ago that if you cut the top off a tomato plant it would die. Is there any truth to that? I don't argue with the old man unless I have my facts straight.

Pruning tomatoes. A lot depends on whether the tomato is determinate or indeterminate as to how a plant reacts to pruning. Topping won't kill it.
