Plant ID help?
permalink

This plant grows on cliff faces and in high rocky outcroppings near where I live and are very hard to find and in limited numbers. I brought this home from a hike and stuck it in a pot with some Fox Farms ocean forrest. I know knothing of the care and feeding of this plant. I think it's some type of agave but not sure. Had one a few years back and they give off a nice flower similar to aloe.
The plant is amazing because it looks like it's covered in powdered sugar and they are not trichomes but a very fine white dust that sheens on the surface of the petals.
Thanks if anyone can tell me what this is.

That looks like one of the kalanchoes, swordfish. Not sure on that, but it resembles one.

looks kind of like a crassulaceae, which is indeed a type of kalanchoes.

you take care of it kind of like weed. as much light as possible, a good generous watering when you do, but sparingly. only when the soils actually dry.

every 3 to 4 waterings you can use a light dose of an even amount of N P K, 20-20-20. say 1/4 to half recommended dose.

if the plant seems to loose it's luster, you may be over feeding. cut back dosage, not frequency. better too dry then too much. heard that one before...

I don't know if this one flowers...the ones my gandpa had did, and you just cut back N, and give more P.

you can clone them as well.

nice looking plant

Hey that was fast, you guys know your plants. I have only discovered these isolated native plants high up in rock ledges, strange they like that environment. Very little soil where you find these things, just solid rock. This specimun was a little different and I scooped out as much of the root mass so I think it will survive.
Good to know about the full sun, dry pot upon watering, and a balanced 20-20-20 fert should do the trick. Need some orchid food anyway maybe that stuff will work.

That's an interesting looking plant. Does it have cactus-type leaves (bloated leaves)? It looks like they may be a bit thicker than most. I'm picturing this location to not have much water.

I've got some too. They were in my yard already when I bought the house years ago. The way I've been taking care of mine is...I do nothing. Yep, I ignore them and a few other native looking plants and they do fine. Now occasionally they get watered when i hand water surrounding landscape(a few times a year) but I'v never fed them... no wait, a few winters ago i was on this kick about trucking in humic compost and at that time they got a top dressing of that, but that's it. My neighbor has some and I'm not sure if they are the same exact variety, but they make this huge flower... When I say huge I mean it's an 8 foot spear that goes up about 5 feet and then hangs over about another 3 feet... It's amazing to say the least.
