Starting herbs from seed
permalink

How long should I expect to wait from the time seeds pop through the soil to the first harvest? I realize that the times will vary from herb to herb. I have searched and I can't find it anywhere. I have always purchased plants and kept them indoors but they all died while I was on vacation and I can't find plants anywhere.

depends on the herb. Most herbs that you use are just the leaves and stems, so you can pick a little off as you go and don't really "harvest" the whole plant until fall before die-back. So you can begin to harvest as soon as you have a decent sized plant that you can take a couple leaves from without killing the thing. Maybe a month or so?

Four and a half months, a few months longer if grown naturally outdoors. If you go to extrodinary lengths and clone plants to determine sex before waiting for pre-flowers, it might happen sooner. Most plants take 9-10 weeks to express sex and even longer if grown outside. Another 9-10 weeks is needed for flowering, again could be longer time period if growing outdoors. Starting plants this time of year outside isnt going to work unless your in the southern hemisphere, you will indeed grow a plant but not very effective medicine.
